This Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Columbia APAMSA is raising funds to support the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC) to stay open. Your donation will help CBWCHC to
1) maintain staff capacity,
2) continue providing enabling services like social services, and health education, and
3) continue providing necessary medical care to vulnerable patients.
Charles B. Wang Community Health Center is a nonprofit health center providing primary care in Chinatown, Manhattan and Flushing, Queens, with a focus on medically underserved Asian American communities. CBWCHC and other federally qualified health centers are required to provide care to patients regardless of their ability to pay - they provide care to 1 in 5 uninsured and Medicaid patients in this country!
During this public health crisis, community health centers are needed more than ever as reliable and affordable points of access to medical care. In addition to the direct health impacts of the coronavirus, the economic impacts of this crisis have hit Chinatown, NY and Flushing, NY particularly hard, and they will have downstream health effects. Unemployment is rising, physical and mental health conditions are increasing in prevalence, and households are struggling to access food, child care, and social services. For patients with limited English ability, seeking help and sorting through changing public health guidance is extra challenging.
CBWCHC is facing difficult decisions and challenges brought on by COVID-19, as revenue has dropped dramatically with the shift of nearly 90% of patient visits to telehealth, which is reimbursed at only a fraction of in-person care. Their biggest fundraiser of the year was postponed due to COVID-19, and annual federal government funding remains unreliable, as Congress struggles to reauthorize the Community Health Center Fund before it expires in November.
