Emergency $ for Kids & Families Affected by ICE Enforcement
On Monday, July 21, the Market Basket store in the North End of New Bedford began dismissing its Central American employees as a result of an I-9 audit. The store confirmed that this was directly related to ICE activities. At least 47 employees lost their jobs, without adequate warning as usually required under law. Check this story for more details.

CCT needs your donation, now more than ever -- so we can support these workers and their families, along with the children and families of over 40 community members who are still in ICE detention.

We started this GoFundMe campaign in March, after agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stormed a car wash in New Bedford on March 11 and arrested three Guatemalan workers.

Since then, there have been several additional ICE raids in our community, including two that have involved physical violence.

We know that the government has its eye on communities like ours, with large numbers of vulnerable immigrants and their children.

Help CCT support unaccompanied teenaged immigrants
Dozens of Central American teenaged immigrants are being exploited at local workplaces, including seafood companies and Market Basket supermarket. They came to the U.S to escape crushing poverty and lack of opportunity, or to escape abusive situations, and are employed in violation of labor laws. They work because they need to – they must support themselves and help their families back home. 17-year old Juana is one of several teenaged girls who were sexually harassed by supervisors or co-workers at Market Basket, and others have experienced workplace injuries and other forms of abuse. The photo above shows the hand of a teenaged boy who suffered chemical burns at a local seafood processing plant.

CCT is helping over two dozen young immigrants pursue legal remedies, obtain work authorization, and secure other forms of immigration relief, but in the meantime they need to take care of their daily needs. Your donation will help CCT provide them with funds to purchase food, clothing, and pay their rent.

Here's how we'll use these funds:

$12,000 will support rental assistance.

$3,000 will help purchase toiletries and clothing

It is founded, staffed, and governed entirely by immigrant workers. Our multifaceted approach addresses individual workers' complaints; focuses on specific workplaces with a history of exploitative conditions; and targets temporary agencies which provide a smokescreen for employers to hide their reliance upon unauthorized workers. We do this by empowering workers to advocate for themselves.

Josué Deodoro Tiquiram Sam
Josué Deodoro Tiquiram Sam was a young Maya K'iche' migrant from Guatemala who came to the U.S. in 2022. He came from a poor family of subsistence farmers who raised corn on rented land. His goal was to buy a piece of land and build a house for his parents and siblings. He found work in the construction industry, but was killed in a workplace accident on September 6, 2023. His body was flown back to Guatemala and he was buried there on September 25. CCT is raising money to help his parents defray the costs of sending the body back to Guatemala and the funeral expenses.

Help immigrant fire victims and survivors
Around midnight on April 19, fire raged through the apartment building at 1283 Acushnet Avenue in the North End of New Bedford, destroying the homes and belongings of over 20 Central American immigrant workers and their families. Two men, Tomás Gómez and Juan Macario, perished in the blaze. Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores (Community Workers' Center) advocates for the rights of immigrant and low-wage workers, and we are raising money to help these workers who lost everything but the clothes on their backs. We are also raising funds to repatriate the remains of Tomás and Juan. Burial in one's hometown cemetery is an important part of our Mayan cultural traditions. It will costs approximately $10,000 to repatriate the two victims' remains. Please help us support our brothers and sisters!

Fondos de emergencias para apoyar familias afectadas por ICE
El 10 de marzo, agentes del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) irrumpieron en un lavadero de autos en New Bedford y arrestaron a tres trabajadores guatemaltecos. Los hombres fueron enviados a un centro de detención en Plymouth, a kilómetros de sus hogares y familias. Exactamente un mes antes, agentes del ICE entraron en una tienda en el extremo norte de New Bedford y detuvieron a un hombre en un centro de detención de inmigrantes.
