Central Florida Dreamplex's Orlando Magic Dreamers Youth Wheelchair basketball team needs your support!

The Orlando Magic Dreamers will begin their second season and expect to have two youth teams this year to compete in the NWBA during the 2024 - 25 season. Our youth team practices Saturday mornings and travels to compete against other wheelchair basketball teams throughout the country. We are fundraising to help support anticipated costs needed to help our teams play this season! Below are anticipated costs for the upcoming season:

Since beginning to offer adaptive sports in 2019, Central Florida Dreamplex has seen the tremendous opportunity to reach local youth and adults living with disabilities, especially physical disabilities. As adaptive sports programs grow, they are mostly limited by the financial resources to help acquire equipment and support program endeavors. Most families affected by disabilities are already facing hardships and are often unable to purchase their own equipment. They turn to the organization as an outlet to help the youth or adults living with a disability not only compete in sport(s) but also to help them be a part of a community where the person with a disability can remain active and have fun. Central Florida Dreamplex is looking to expand its efforts to offer opportunities like wheelchair basketball to youth and appreciate the support to help continue to grow our program.

The Friendship Place is more than just a facility; it's a community hub where individuals with disabilities can gather, socialize, and engage in meaningful activities. The program includes fitness and wellness activities, social and life skills training, leisure activities, and community outings.

The Friendship Place attendees have direct and immediate access to physical, speech, and occupational therapy services as well as recreation and fitness programs to ensure healthy minds, bodies, and souls. Nowhere else in Florida offers this variety of programs and services at a single location.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our online fundraiser benefiting the Orlando Magic Dreamers Youth Wheelchair Basketball Team—the only adaptive sports team in Central Florida! Our program provides a unique opportunity for youth athletes with physical disabilities to develop skills, build confidence, and compete in the exciting sport of wheelchair basketball under the guidelines of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA).

Recent Achievement: The Orlando Magic Dreamers have recently earned their first-ever invitation to the National Wheelchair Basketball Championships

(April 4-6, 2025, Richmond, Virginia), proudly representing Central Florida on a national stage.

Let’s come together to champion inclusion, athletic excellence, and opportunity for these inspiring young athletes!

The Central Florida Dreamplex, a project of Central Florida Pediatric Therapy Foundation, aims to provide opportunity and inclusion of all persons, regardless of ability, for sports, recreation, therapy, and employment. Their Vision is to create communities that allow all persons to achieve their dreams. 

All monies raised through this Foundation will be used for the 2 of us to attend this event and will be used as follows:

     * $6,000 estimated amount for registration fees, transportation, lodging, uniforms, team meals for 2 athletes and a family member each (money raised will cover these items first)

     * $2,000 estimated amount for team activity, non-team meals/snacks, other event related expenses (these to be covered last)

In 2021 Dreamplex hosted a sled hockey Jamboree to give kids a chance to try sled hockey while allowing more experienced players to play and compete with the Jacksonville team. The adult team began competing in 2022 with games and tournaments throughout the southeast United States. Dreamplex aspires to offer the adult team more competitive opportunities while initiating the next steps to give kids the opportunity to participate in more youth hockey tournaments.

Dreamplex’s efforts to establish adaptive sports opportunities in 2019 included the start of a sled hockey team named the Sled Bears, inspired by Orlando’s local hockey team the Solar Bears. Initially, a series of practices were offered to provide children and adults with physical disabilities an opportunity to play hockey. Practices have been offered at the Ice Den in Maitland and at the Ice Factory in Kissimmee to help children and adults with disabilities in Central Florida learn the game of hockey, develop their skills, and have fun.

Dreamplex’s efforts to establish adaptive sports opportunities in 2019 included the aspiration to offer track & field opportunities through clinics offered to all children. In 2020, a small group of physically disabled children participated for the first time, and a larger clinic was held in 2022 with the help of Challenged Athletes Foundation and experienced coaches and athletes including Daniel Romanchuk.

Dreamplex has discovered that offering adaptive track & field events is most challenged by not having adequate equipment. Unlike other sports, track & field equipment, especially racing chairs, have a critical need to have custom adjustments made to each child before they adapt and learn to grow in the sport. The chairs are more complex to operate so before children can learn to race, they must fit comfortably into a racing chair which varies by each individual's physical disabilities and limitations. We aim to grow our supply of equipment, including racing chairs and field implements, so that a more diverse group of children and adults can participate and compete in this sport.

This fundraiser also supports our current Dreamplex Adaptive Sports team in their efforts to attend regional and national track & field competitions in the spring and summer of 2025. Support raised will go towards uniforms, travel expenses, and registration fees for both local competitions and the Move United Nationals being held in Michigan in July 2025.
