$100k for Center for Family Life
Starting in 2021, CFL will be running as an independent entity (was part of SCO), and we need to fill the coffers!!
This $100k will go a LONG way!
OH RIGHT.. for your entertainment (and to Mina's dismay), I will be growing out a beard for the month of November, and posting an update 1x/week (hence my mug on the fundraise).
Some basic, Demographic Info on Sunset Park & its residents:
- 17% of residents live below the poverty line
- 30% receive SNAP (fka food stamps)
- 24% of residents work in industries MOST impacted by COVID (restaurants, hotels, retail and personal care services)
- 46% are foreign-born
Co-Op Programs:
- in 2018, CFL launched BRIGHTLY, the first worker co-op franchise in the United States; it aims to improve working conditions and revolutionize economic opportunity in the cleaning industry for worker-owners, most of whom are immigrant women from low-wealth communities.
- 2017, CFL launched Up & Go, first booking app owned by Domestic Workers; this co-ope increases workers' wages and assets and job safety.
- the AVERAGE TAKE-HOME WAGES of Brightly and Up&Go is $25/hour versus $12/hour before joining the Co-Op.
Food Pantry - CFL distributes 100,000 meals in a typical year; during Covid, the pantry has doubled its hours and is serving over 10,000 meals/week.
These are just a few of the things CFL does in Sunset Park; I encourage you to check out the site for more information:
