Hi, I’m Dr. Myeshia Babers, and I’m raising funds to create Beyond the Schoolyard, a feature-length documentary that captures the legacy of Calvert Colored School through the voices of its alumni—across generations.
This project walks through time with former students to ask questions only they can answer:
- What did this school give you that you couldn’t have gotten anywhere else?
- What lesson has stayed with you your whole life?
- If this school could talk, what story would it tell about your class?
- What must the world never forget about this school?
This film is not just about the past. It’s about what happens when we honor the places that shaped us—especially at a time when our educational history is being erased from the public record.
How Your Contribution Helps
We’re raising $50,000 to cover:
- Filming on location in Calvert and other historic sites
- Interviews with alumni, educators, and community members
- Archival research and rights licensing
- Post-production (editing, sound, music, color)
- Community screenings, festival submissions, and educational distribution
- AND—contributing directly to a critical re-roofing project for the original school building, where part of the roof has collapsed. Preserving this space is essential not just for memory—but for the future.
