Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society

Calgary Wildlife is a charitable organization in Calgary, Alberta, that treats injured and orphaned wildlife.

Every year the number of patients that come through the doors increases, which means more resources and equipment are needed to care for them. For example, last year, Calgary Wildlife saw nearly 3000 patients come through our doors, including songbirds, deer, skunks, amphibians, squirrels, hares, owls, hawks, and more.

 

 

 

 

 

Currently, we have three incubators that we use to treat baby birds, baby squirrels, and any animal with serious injuries or illnesses that require intensive care. During the spring and summer months, our incubators are always completely full. With the increase in the number of patients we see year after year, we need another two incubators that will help us provide expert, compassionate care to all the patients that come through our doors.

 

 

 

 

 

It costs $1500 to buy one large incubator plus $300 in shipping.

We hope to have another two incubators onsite before the end of April when our busy season starts.

All donations received will be put directly towards the purchase of these incubators.

Today, we received incredible news: two donor-advised funds through the Calgary Foundation have stepped up in a big way. Their support will not only cover the remainder of our summer staffing needs but also help bridge the gap from the 20% decline in donations we’ve experienced since March.

Thanks to this funding, we can continue to provide essential care throughout the busy summer months—covering costs like patient food, medications, and the PPE our team needs to safely treat and rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife.

This summer, we’re facing a crisis. For the first time in our history, Calgary Wildlife did not receive the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) grant - funding that is absolutely essential to our seasonal operations.

Every year, this grant allows us to hire up to 11 summer staff who help us manage the 10x increase in patient intakes from May through August. Without these dedicated staff, we can’t operate for the required 14-16 hours a day, 7 days a week—and without that, we may be forced to limit wildlife intakes and cut hours, an outcome we are desperate to avoid.

This is not just about staffing. It’s about survival—for the animals who depend on us.

Why Calgary Wildlife Matters

We are:

-The only wildlife rehabilitation centre within Calgary city limits

-Home to Canada’s only dedicated bat hospital, helping to conserve Alberta’s endangered bat species

-A front-line organization for surveillance of white-nose syndrome and other wildlife diseases

-A non-profit which offers wildlife response and hotline advice and help to the public free of charge.

-An organization which values public education, preventing human-wildlife conflict and promoting coexistence.

️ Last Summer, We Took in 41 Animals in One Day

After a severe August hailstorm, our clinic admitted 41 trauma patients in just a few hours. The only reason we were able to respond? Our trained permanent staff AND seasonal staff hired through the CSJ grant.

We need to raise $50,000 to maintain our summer operations—and continue being there for Calgary’s wildlife when they need us most.

Calgary Wildlife relies on incubators to nurture and support our patients, spanning from those recovering from surgeries to, critical patients, to teeny tiny babies. Currently, we find ourselves short on these essential tools.

To ensure optimal care, particularly during the demanding baby season, we urgently require four additional incubators on-site. This includes two small and two large units, totalling $4200.

The curse of wildlife rehabilitation and electronics is real!

In the past year we've gone through 3 second hand/refurbished dryers, due to heavy use, and our washer is on its last legs, and because of this, we've decided that we must invest in a brand new set.

Doing laundry is a full time job during our busy season (spring and summer) and we must have machines that are reliable, high quality, as well as energy efficient (saving us on power bills). Our friends at Bowest Appliances have generously offered to sell us a brand new, high quality washer/dryer set, at a steeply discounted price!

All in, with tax and delivery, we need to raise $2250.

We are hoping to have the new units on site before the last week of April, when baby season kicks off.

Our new offices spaces are up and running and our new admissions trailer has had its walls put up and painted! Thank you to our fabulous volunteers for helping us put up walls, paint, and assemble new office furniture. We've been so fortunate to have had a wonderful design team at Come On In Interior Design Studio help us with not only our new admissions space, but also our office space and a new break room for our team (which they currently don't have) pro bono! We are currently short $2000 for all the new office furniture needed to complete our spaces.

We need to have our new spaces up and running before the busy season, so by mid March, so we can perfect the flow of the new set up.

Calgary Wildlife is fundraising for a new wildlife admissions trailer.

To make our patient admission process faster and smoother, we are in need of an admissions trailer which will be placed next to our new isolation trailer. Having a separate admissions area will be a game changer for our staff, make it easier for the public during drop-offs, and most importantly make the admissions process less stressful for the animals coming into care.

The wonderful news is that ATCO has very generously offered to sell us a second-hand trailer AT COST, and one of our long-term volunteers has stepped up and paid the full cost of the trailer already! What an amazing start!

Now, we need some extra help to cover the cost of shipping the trailer and the materials we'll need for basic renovations.

Shipping and set up costs: $1500

Materials (paint, flooring, drywall): $2500

Total: $4000

We need to get the trailer delivered as soon as possible so the electrics can be hooked up before the weather gets too cold and so we can get it ready for next spring.
