Kira Sullivan Hernandez Memorial Scholarship

Kira Sullivan Hernandez was passionate about music. She, along with her husband Jorge, devoted her life to teaching, producing and creating music and art.

Kira's light will shine bright with all of her students and friends. She touched so many lives in such a positive way.

In her honor, we thought it appropriate to create a scholarship fund in her name to help deserving voice students at her alma mater, Cal State East Bay.
Kira so enjoyed her time there.

Our goal is to create a sustaining scholarship, but if we fall short we will create a few one-time music scholarships.

Any funds raised will benefit Cal State East Bay Educational Foundation for the Music Department (Cal State University, East Bay), and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that will carry on Kira's legacy.

Armando Samaniego Memorial Scholarship Fund
Dear friends,

The last few weeks have been a blur, as you can imagine. At times, I have felt that I was walking in a fog, covering uncharted territory physically, mentally and emotionally. But every day, I have felt your love and compassion envelop me and lift me up-- through a note left on a bouquet of flowers on my porch-bench or another ice-chest full of nutritious food left outside my door or a text message reminding me that I do not walk alone, that you are near me, ready to do whatever I need to lighten my load. Your love and compassion are the fuel that keeps me moving forward.

In the midst of all the sorrow, a dear friend of the family reached out to ask if I wanted to set up a foundation to keep Armando's legacy alive. It reminded me of dreaming with Armando -- "wouldn't it be wonderful if we could set up a scholarship fund in perpetuity or an endowment to help a deserving kid, any kid, attain a higher education That would be something, wouldn't it?”

Armando and I understood that attaining a higher education is one of the biggest steps a person can take to pull themselves out of poverty. And you never know where that first step might lead. It might lead that person to become a doctor, or nurse, or a physical therapist, or lawyer or accountant, or a social worker, or a psychologist or a teacher. We dreamed about transforming lives, the way that our lives had been transformed by that important first step-- attaining a higher education.

Here’s a true story about Armando that fueled his dream of setting up a scholarship fund. When Armando was an undergraduate at Cal State Long Beach applying to Medical Schools, an advisor he greatly admired, Dr. Marcy lent an unexpected hand.

When Dr. Marcy found out that Armando was interviewing at Harvard Medical School, he invited Armando to dinner. After dinner, he asked Armando if he knew what he would be wearing to the interview. In true Armando fashion, he told him he hadn't thought about it much. Dr. Marcy intuited that Armando likely did not have a business suit yet, much less the type of long wool coat that one would need to survive a Cambridge winter. So he told Armando to follow him to his closet, where he proceeded to have him try on various suits, ties and finally a long thick London Fog wool coat. This kind professor, let Armando borrow a business suit and a proper winter coat so that Armando would be properly dressed for his interview.

Armando never forgot that gesture and someday he planned to pay that gesture forward.

So, back to my friend's question, here’s the answer. We are setting up a memorial scholarship fund at Cal State East Bay to support first generation college students. We want them to know the sacrifices they have made to get this far are worth it and that there are people rooting for their success.

Thank you for helping bring Armando's dream to fruition.

CalUCA - Armando G Samaniego, MD Scholarship Fund
Armando was proud to be a part of CalUCA. His membership and the camaraderie with you all meant so much to him.

When Armando first realized he wanted to play a role in changing the healthcare landscape for the better, he turned to the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA) for advice on launching STAT MED Urgent Care. He soon realized there was a need for a UCAOA chapter in California. He worked with Dr. Roger Hicks, Dr. Richard Park, and others to start this chapter. As recently as May of this year, Armando was busy recruiting people to work on the various committees responsible for putting on the CalUCA Monterey 2022 Conference. He would be so proud of all the work done to bring this conference to fruition.

Armando’s story is a quintessential immigrant story. He was a child of a farm worker family that settled in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. He was one of the first in his family to attain a higher education and chose Emergency Medicine as a way to serve the world. After 25 years of practicing Emergency Medicine at various medical centers in the SF East Bay, he decided to explore the feasibility of launching his own Urgent Care clinic. During the UCAOA Conference in 2013, he felt he had found his new home and eagerly attended all the start-up workshops offered, where he honed his operational and bootstrapping skills. Most importantly, he connected with others like you, who shared his dream of creating an alternative to the busy and often prohibitively expensive Emergency Room. He felt strongly that a patient ought to have easy access to high quality advanced urgent care medicine without fear of financial distress. He felt this was the right thing to do.

Many of you can relate to this, as you embarked on your journey to provide urgent care medicine in your communities. You have come to CalUCA to nurture and advance your dream and will leave this conference better prepared to confront the challenges you will meet in your day-to-day practice.

The Armando G. Samaniego Endowed Scholarship at Cal State East Bay was established to support first-generation students pursuing a career in healthcare. Although Armando is not here with us today as he had planned, he always dreamed of being able to give back by encouraging those following in his footsteps. Over $50,000 has already been raised for this scholarship fund by friends and family. Now with CalUCA’s support, Armando’s dream to inspire future generations of healthcare professionals can help many more students. Please consider donating today to help reach the goal of doubling the number of students that can be awarded scholarships.
