On Thursday, September 7, 2023, K9 Kane suffered a serious injury during training. K9 Kane was jumping a fence when his right rear paw got stuck in one of the chain links of the fence. His body continued over the fence while his back paw was stuck on the other side. K9 Kane was rushed to an emergency orthopedic veterinarian clinic for treatment where it was determined that he had torn two knee ligaments and would need to undergo surgery to repair the injuries. The cranial crucial ligament (or CCL) is one of the most important stabilizers inside the knee joint. In humans, the CCL is called the anterior cruciate ligament (or ACL).

Doctors discussed with K9 Kane’s handler and other members of the K9 Unit that without surgery he would not be able to return to work. On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, K9 Kane underwent surgery to repair his knee. K9 Kane’s estimated recovery time is approximately 10 weeks. However, rest and recovery play a huge part in determining his ability to return to work. Once given the go-ahead from doctors, K9 Kane will be able to return to work on a limited basis and will slowly work his way back to being at full capacity.

K9 Kane is a very energetic and high-driven 4 year-old Belgian Malinois who has been serving Brooke County, West Virginia since July of 2019. K9 Kane is a certified dual-purpose narcotics and apprehension working dog. K9 Kane lives for being on patrol with his human partner, Sergeant Baker, and loves being outside and running around when off-duty. So, it has not been an easy transition the the “slower” lifestyle.

The Brooke County K9 Unit is funded by donations. The estimated cost of treatment, surgery, medications, and recovery/rehab for K9 Kane are around $7,000 (the exact amount will not be known until he has received all of his treatment). Fortunately, we had enough in our K9 Fund that we were able to proceed with the surgery for K9 Kane. However, we are now tasked with fundraising to recuperate funds in the event of another incident with one of our dogs. The Brooke County K9 Unit currently consists of three dogs - K9 Dakota, K9 Kane, and K9 Duke. This fund exists for the purpose of providing training equipment, continued education, and other necessities that are required for having a K9 Unit. The most important purpose of this fund is to cover medical costs for our canines. We don’t ever want to be faced with a catastrophic injury and our dogs not be able to receive the treatment they need. These dogs work alongside their handlers each and every shift to ensure the safety of their community. Any donation big or small would be greatly appreciated.
