The BCIF is aiming to raise two million dollars to finance the small-scale clinical trial of a new breast implant cover infused with the Doxorubicin chemotherapy drug that would provide targeted, local chemotherapy to breast tissue post-reconstructive surgery. This would reduce side effects and limit the need for global chemotherapy. Additional benefits would include a reduced risk of capsular contracture, allowing for fewer surgeries after reconstruction. The Dox-eluting envelope would slowly and systematically continue releasing the drug, killing any cancer cells on site.
