If you answered yes to any of these questions, we at Benson Plant Rescue-Community Produce Rescue (BPR-CPR ) need your support! Here’s why:
BPR-CPR, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, was born 24 years ago and has blossomed into an award-winning program combating global warming by reducing the amount of organic waste going into landfills, where it releases methane when buried. CPR (Community Produce Rescue) reclaims produce discards from grocery stores and annually distributes tons of fresh vegetables and fruit to a network of homeless shelters, food pantries, drug/alcohol rehabs, group homes for mental clients, domestic violence and sexually-trafficked women’s shelters, and refugee families.
We like to think of BPR as a humane society for plants, giving well-loved plants a new lease on life! BPR recycles damaged, overstock, and end-season plants from nurseries. We also take donations of perennials and houseplants to re-home with other plant enthusiasts. Proceeds from plant sales support the Omaha Public Library (over $70,000 for children’s books and computers donated since 1999) and CPR.
OUR NEED: This last summer we lost our lease on a property we had been developing for the last decade. What was tragic turned to a blessing as we realized BPR-CPR qualified for a State of Nebraska Economic Development grant. With this capital, we plan to purchase a 3.7-acre lot and build an entirely new rescue, research, and education center for Urban Horticulture. By the end of April, the State will be ready to award $400,000 to BPR-CPR on the condition that they provide an equal match. So:
