Extraordinary medical care, surgery
Boston Terrier Rescue of Greater Houston has recently taken in a large number of sick and injured dogs, including healthy-appearing dogs who have been diagnosed with malignant tumors and other maladies. We rarely ask for donations, but due to the overwhelming number of extraordinary medical expenses, we have no choice at this time. The majority of our rescues come in from kill shelters, and we never refuse any Boston Terrier, regardless of age or medical condition. Here are some of our rescues requiring specialized care:
MITZIE, a sweet girl whose elderly owner went into assisted care living, required surgery to remove mast cell tumors and a fatty tumor surrounding her left salivary gland.
RITA HAYWORTH, one of our puppymill survivors, has undergone extensive surgery for removal of mammary tumors, but she had so many that she will need to undergo a second surgery. She also has a heavy load of heartworms, and will require treatment.
CHELSEA is another of our older girls who was surrendered by her owner during the freeze last winter, because the woman's husband wouldn't let the dogs in the house. She has just been diagnosed with multiple mast call tumors, and she will require surgery this month. Chelsea also has chronic eye problems and is on permanent daily eye care prescriptions.
FUZZEL is a puppymill boy from a small puppymill operation in Texas, and he has a large abdominal tumor that will need to be surgically removed. He also recently completed heartworm treatment.
MERLIN, BUCKY and EVIE are all on heartworm treatment for a heavy loads of heartworms. Our protocol involves 30 days of pretreatment with Doxycycline, then an injection of Immiticide, followed 30 days later by two more injections. During treatment, the dogs remain on Prednisone and other meds as needed.
PENELOPE is one of our newer girls who has several tumors and has also begun having seizures. She has just undergone extensive testing.
ROSCOE is one of our senior boys living his life in a long-term foster home. He also just had extensive medical retesting.
MONTGOMERY is another of our senior boys in a permanent foster home who has been diagnosed with Cushing's, so he is on daily medications twice a day. After arriving in rescue, he had significant eye problems that resulted in him losing both eyes, so he is now completely blind. He will be on Cushing's medication for the remainder of his life, and requires testing every six months.
We have many senior Boston Terriers in permanent foster homes, and they all have ongoing expenses for their care. These are only an example of our special needs and extraordinary medical expenses that we are currently incurring. Please help us by spreading the word! All donations are greatly appreciated.
