2019 BORP Youth Sports Fundraiser
For almost 35 years, the Youth Sports Program at BORP has provided sports and recreation opportunities for kids with physical disabilities throughout Northern California.
Currently, the Youth Sports Program offers competitive sports opportunities in Wheelchair Basketball and Sled Hockey for kids with a broad range of disabilities, including paralysis, CP, spina Bifida, Arthrogryposis, amputee, and others.

What make us unique?
1. The BORP Youth Sports Program offers the ONLY competitive Youth Wheelchair Basketball program in Northern California.
Kids with physical disabilities cannot play on their high school team, or even a local community team. These kids rely on BORP programs to provide a structured, positive sports environment for competition.
2. The BORP Youth Sports Program creates an environment that fosters independence and academic success. Our competitive kids must meet academic standards to compete, and each kid must learn to be an “independent traveler” before they can travel with the team to competitions. This means they can manage all their personal care issues on their own, and they are moving towards becoming independent.
3. The BORP Youth Sports Program creates an environment where kids with physical disabilities can come together in a gym or the rink and be seen strictly for the effort and energy they apply, and not for the nature, type, or limitations their physical disability presents.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
BORP's Youth Sports Program provides scholarships for travel and competition for all BORP student athletes meeting academic standards. Our competitive program has grown again, over 40% from last year and we have more kids traveling to competitions in Wheelchair Basketball and Sled Hockey.
The money collected will enable the BORP student athletes to travel to Regional and National tournaments and provide them the same opportunity to compete as able-bodied student athletes. Money will also be used to maintain and repair the current sports chairs and equipment on hand. This year, BORP’s Board of Directors will match up to $5,500 of donations made to BORP's youth sports between now and Dec. 31. This is an incredibly generous offer and will potentially double your donation.
BORP currently has two teams for Wheelchair Basketball. The Prep team is for players up to 12 years old, and the competitive Varsity team (Jr. Road Warriors) is for players 13 years old through H.S. graduation. These teams provide the opportunity for the kids in our programs to compete against other kids with physical disabilities around the Western United States. Because of the limited number of teams available for kids with physical disabilities, the only time they can compete is when they travel out of state for tournaments. Our Varsity athletes have the same academic accountability standards as able-bodied athletes and over the past 14 years have had a 98% graduation rate from High School. 70% of our participants go onto some form of post-secondary education. This year, two of our graduating seniors have already signed letters of intent to attend and play basketball at the University of Arizona.
Our Sled Hockey program (Sharks) enables kids the opportunity to sit in an adapted sled and skate and play hockey while sitting down. Using specially designed sleds with skate blades mounted beneath them, a player can skate around on the ice and handle and shoot a puck using modified hockey sticks.
Three years ago, in our first formal competitions, the Sharks won the USA Hockey - Disabled Hockey Festival, Youth Sled - C Division National Championship. Last year the team advanced back to the championship game for the 3rd year in a row, moving up to the B-Division. This year, the National Tournament will be held in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where the team intends to compete for the championship again.
The kids in our programs would not have these opportunities to participate and compete without BORP, and you can help make this possible again.
