Imagine your teenager, full of dreams, suddenly thrust into war, facing loss and fear. For Bucha’s students, this was reality—but through storytelling, they found light in the darkness.

A Book Born from Unimaginable Tragedy

Ashborn is a collection of 44 magical realism short stories written by Ukrainian teenagers who endured the Russian Army’s occupation of Bucha. These are not just stories—they are acts of resilience, a way for young voices to process trauma and reclaim their hope.

This book was lovingly compiled and edited by Lynne Welton, an American English teacher who returned to Ukraine in 2022 to help rebuild after the liberation of the Kyiv region.

Lynne’s Journey

Lynne’s connection to Ukraine began in 2015 when she first arrived in Kyiv after Russia’s invasion of Crimea and Donbas. She was drawn to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and their determination to protect their homeland. After the full-scale invasion in 2022, Lynne couldn’t stay away.

“I saw the horrific photos after Bucha was liberated and made a promise that I would come and help rebuild however I could. So, I returned to Ukraine and became an English teacher at a local public high school in Bucha,” Lynne shares.

Knowing the therapeutic power of storytelling and imagination in overcoming traumatic experiences, Lynne encouraged her students to channel their emotions into stories.

“My brilliant juniors and seniors wrote short stories that I edited and collected into this book for you to enjoy,” she adds.

Lynne’s husband, a Ukrainian soldier fighting on the frontlines, was so inspired by her book idea that he personally funded the cover art and printing of the first edition. His support ensured Lynne’s students could have a physical copy to take home at the end of the academic year.

Teenagers Everywhere Deserve to Dream

We are Ukrainian-born Americans whose hearts have broken along with the rest of the world watching the brutality in our home country. Like many others, we have donated thousands of dollars to charities and given everything we can to friends and family back home. But every day we receive heartbreaking calls for help from more people who are waiting for humanitarian support as the war is only getting worse.

We've realized that we can work faster than the large charities we supported. We have the phone numbers and addresses of countless people on the front line. We can personally and directly put resources in the hands of refugees who have run out of gas to flee, parents who don’t have money for food, and grandparents who need medicine today, not in two weeks or months. We need help to increase our reach.

Examples of aid we’ve personally provided so far include:

- Diapers, formula, and sanitary wipes for pregnant women in bunkers who fled the bombed hospital in Chernihiv.

- Gas for the vans of Polish volunteers struggling across the border to hand-deliver life-saving supplies.

- Backpacks full of children's supplies for kids fleeing across the Ukrainian-Polish border.

Most of the time, foundations and charities are the perfect way to provide assistance. But there are other times when aid is needed faster than large charities can move. We act instantaneously to put every dollar we get in the hands of the people who need it.

We are an approved 501c3 charity, and we work tirelessly to make your gift matter faster here than anywhere else. We believe in transparency, and we are operating on a strict volunteer basis. No one on our team is paid, and 100% of donations go to Ukrainians in need. For our donors, we provide regular updates on funds spent on Facebook and Instagram.
