School for Children with Disabilities - Guatemala
You can make a difference in the life of a child with a disability from a small rural community in Guatemala by donating today to Behavior Links. Help us continue to support in the formation of a school for children with disabilities.
Behavior Links met Ana Beatriz Vásquez, the founder of Oxlajuj Q’anil CRISEVI , in 2017 on one of our trips to Guatemala. We immediately recognized the potential her vision had in improving the lives of children with disabilities who are part of a community with severely limited resources. We have been supporting, in different ways, her organization, Oxlajuj Q’anil CRISEVI, since our first meeting. As of December 2021, Behavior Links, through a formal collaboration agreement, began to financially support the school monthly in addition to contracting a local psychologist, Lizeth, to directly guide and assist with all pre-planned benchmarks for Phase 1 (administrative organization) and Phase 2 (academic and developmental evaluations^), both met as of June 2022.
We respectfully request your help so that we may continue to financially support the school for the rest of the school year and continue to meet the programmed benchmarks for the year, initiating Phase 3. In Guatemala, the school year runs from January to November. Phase 3 involves the design and implementation of the school’s instructional framework with the goals of identifying an engaging instructional model that incorporates the Montessori methods as well as the overall instructional design and curriculum development.
^Nine new students with varying disabilities recently transferred from another nearby school that closed. Lizeth and the Oxlajuj Q’anil team are currently working on completing the evaluations (Phase 2).

As a result of the labor and efforts of Ana Beatriz Vásquez, a mother originally from the community of Robles in Ciudad Quetzal, Oxlajuj Q'anil was born on June 14, 2013, to promote and provide inclusion to individuals with varying disabilities in rural areas of intercultural communities such as Mayans and mixed-race (mixed ancestry with a white European and an indigenous background).
Oxlajuj Q'anil aims to promote inclusive programs to improve the living conditions of children, adolescents, youth, and adults with different disabilities, who do not have economic resources. It seeks to motivate families and raise awareness in society about the current need for integral inclusion.
Currently, Oxlajuj Q'anil provides service in the educational area, with 20 students attending in person, 15 students receiving online education and more than 30 receiving physical therapy. Thus, providing services and support in both areas to all individuals inside and outside the community who need it, receiving different cases and diagnoses, such as: Autism, Down Syndrome, language impairment, learning disability, hearing impairment, multiple disability, psychomotor delay, among others. Due to many families not having the means to travel to the center, volunteer collaborators do home visits in the surrounding community providing much needed therapeutic support.
The mission continues, with support and collaborative efforts from all internal and external volunteers and supporters, families and good-hearted individuals. Day by day they work to maintain the organization, to continue providing educational services to children with disabilities and support to their families, with the knowledge that Oxlajuj Q'anil is the only center of integral inclusion in the community.
Without Oxlajuj, the hope of improving the quality of life of entire families would be reduced by a large percentage, leaving children and adolescents without access to inclusive education and adults without access to physical therapies and emotional support.
