My friend Renata met Polyana a year ago, while her daughter - Millena was going through leukemia treatments. Renata learned about Guilherme's (Polys' son) heartbreaking journey back then. Last week, they connected back in São Paulo, Brazil, where Poly shared a breakthrough treatment that can drastically improve Guilherme's quality of life.

Upon returning to the U.S., Renata created a "Force for Good" group to help Polyana raise funds for Guilherme's medical treatment. Together, we are committed to making a meaningful difference in this family's life.

Guilherme is an extraordinary 11-year-old boy who has already defied the odds. At just 5 years old, he bravely battled and defeated an aggressive brain cancer. Sadly, a year later, he fell into a coma following severe meningitis. At the time, Guilherme had fully recovered from cancer and was already a proud yellow belt in karate.

Since then, Polyana’s family has been relentlessly searching for treatments that could bring even the smallest improvements to Guilherme’s condition.

Now, there’s hope. A treatment called Cytotron has shown remarkable results in cases like Guilherme’s. Featured in the Netflix movie The Two Hemispheres of Lucca, this groundbreaking treatment has renewed hope for families facing similar challenges.

Hi, I’m Jessica and when I was just eighteen, I heard the words no one ever wants to hear: “You have cancer.”

It was Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that changed my life in ways I could never have imagined. I went through treatment, clinging to hope and faith, and after what felt like a lifetime, I was blessed with remission.

Over twenty years have passed since then, but the memories of those days are still vivid in my mind. That experience shaped me deeply. I felt a calling—a whisper in my heart—that led me to become a physician. I wanted to help others the way my doctors helped me. But life, with its unpredictable twists, had more in store for me.

Twenty years after my own battle with lymphoma, my husband, Chun-Der Li —my partner in life and love—was diagnosed with the very same cancer. We fought with everything we had, trying every treatment, every clinical trial, hoping for a miracle. But despite our efforts, he didn’t survive.

He left behind our two beautiful children, who were just three and five at the time. The loss was devastating. I kept asking myself, “Why? What more could I have done?” It’s not easy to move past such a loss. In the midst of pain, I struggled daily to hold on to hope…

In the midst of that pain, something kept echoing in my mind: “Cure cancer. Cure cancer.” But how? I’m not a researcher, I thought. What could I possibly do?

That’s when we discovered an opportunity. During his treatment, we enrolled my husband in a clinical trial at Weill Cornell Medicine, where his cancer cells were studied extensively. The researchers were able to use his cells to create mice models, allowing them to test various treatments. And then, something remarkable happened.

The BIG Breakthrough & The First Victory! – How It Works

The researchers found that by targeting certain “friends” of the cancer cells—specifically fibroblast cells that help the tumor survive—they could significantly reduce the tumor’s growth. This was a breakthrough.

The medication they used wasn’t even designed to target the tumor itself, but rather these supportive cells. And the results were astounding: the tumors stopped growing. This discovery could change the way we treat not just lymphoma, but potentially other blood cancers as well.

It’s a new way of thinking about treatment—one that could give hope to so many who are battling these diseases. Now, I feel it’s my mission to help bring this research to the next stage.

To ensure that others don’t have to go through what my family did, I’m working to raise funds to support this groundbreaking research. But time is running out. Every day, lives are lost to this relentless disease. We can’t afford to wait—more families like mine are depending on us.

Support Victims of Flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Join Approach International Student Center in extending a helping hand to the victims of the devastating floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The recent heavy rains have affected nearly 1.5 million people, with thousands displaced from their homes and in urgent need of assistance.

What's Happening:

Over 85% of municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul are facing the aftermath of these relentless storms. As of the latest update, 163,786 people are displaced, and 67,428 are seeking refuge in shelters. The situation remains critical, with 100 confirmed fatalities, while 130 individuals are still missing and 374 are injured.

Impact on Communities:

The flooding has left 459,000 people without electricity and more than 523,000 without access to clean water, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the affected communities.

Ongoing Crisis:

The rain hasn't stopped, and this tragedy is far from being over. The strong winds, relentless rain, and severe cold are impeding people from having any peace of mind. In fact, more and more people are being affected as the days go by, adding to the urgency of our relief efforts.

Approach International Student Center, INC. is joining BaluarteUSA in launching a GoFundMe campaign to provide immediate relief to those impacted by this disaster. Approach will match up to $15,000 in donations to support local victims.
