Baltimore Underground Science Space

Hi! We are a group of middle and high school students who are competing in iGEM; an international science competition. Our team is made up of students from schools all over the Baltimore region. Please donate to support kids in STEM and nurture our education!

This year we are developing a technology to detect breast cancer’s biomarkers in the blood. Our method is safe, affordable, sustainable, and would save people by detecting cancer before it grows more dangerous. We hope to propose our research in an international competition–IGEM, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to present what we have developed, and make that knowledge widely available to the community

We need your help to make it happen. The price of registration, lab supplies, and other necessities is considerably costly. Specifically, registration to compete costs $600 per team member. That's why we are asking for your support. Any donation will help support our mission, to help us make a difference in our communities and inspire younger generations to be passionate about science.

Wolfgang and Leopold are part of the high school iGEM team. Being part of the team means meeting almost every Saturday from 10 am - 5 pm during the summer (and noon-5 during the school year) PLUS all the online meetings and extra lab hours that must be put in to achieve a gold level project. The team this year has opted to create a triple negative breast cancer blood test that will change color when blood containing positive biomarkers comes into contact with a genetically modified organism (yeast or specific strain of e.coli). There are only 13 US high school teams currently registered and we are proud to be one of them. Our team has 23 students from our community. It costs $600/student to register to compete and we will spend over $2,000 in lab materials.
