Asian Americans Advancing Justice - AAJC, Inc.

Inspired by the Anti-Asian violence fundraising efforts of two amazing groups of small businesses in NYC (@stacheofgoods, @ _cakesbymichelle, and @bigcakemom) and SF (@jamiecakesf), a few of us here in the DC Washington Metropolitan Area would like to keep the momentum going and do the same!

In the past year alone, Anti-Asian hate crimes rose by nearly 150%. Our dearly beloved family and friends are at risk every day and we must put a stop to it. We must stand together and support one another in such difficult times, not just amongst ourselves but alongside our allies. Let's support organizations to help combat Anti-Asian violence.

We are excited to launch this fundraiser for Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), a non-profit organization here in DC. AAJC is now the U.S.'s fastest-growing racial group with the potential and power to shape our nation and the policies that affect us. Their mission is to advance civil and human rights for Asian Americans and to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all.

Services and Programs provided by AAJC include:
1) Bystander Intervention Training with Hollaback (over 10 public events scheduled in the month of April)
2) Workshop for People Experiencing Anti-Asian Harassment (2 public events scheduled in the month of April)
3) Online tracker to report and document hate and harassment via StandAgainstHatred.org
and so much more!

To show appreciation of your support, we've collaborated with 10+ small local businesses (with over 25 prizes available - ranging from yummy baked treats, restaurant gift cards, photography sessions, and much more!) and created a giveaway here in the local DC Washington Metropolitan area. Every $5 donated equals one entry into this giveaway. At the end of this fundraiser on April 19th, we will draw the winners at random and contact you if you win (one prize per person). You must also be able to pick up the prize locally (no shipping of prizes). If you are not able to pick up locally, we will instead extend to you our deepest gratitude and appreciation and the prize will go to the next randomly drawn winner.

This GoFundMe will run from March 30th to April 20th. Our goal is to raise $5000 to give to AAJC and support the momentum of their community outreach. 100% of all proceeds from this GoFundMe will go directly to AAJC.

We are the Intercollegiate APIDA Coalition (ICAC), an alliance of APIDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American) student groups from college campuses across the nation that formed in order to address the rise in anti-Asian racism and violence.

Our group recognizes the long-term importance of legal advocacy for our communities, and that's why we're hosting a fundraiser for Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), a national organization that supports immigration and voting rights for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. We call on members of our college campuses, including students, staff, faculty, and admin to donate to this cause. All donations are directly transferred to AAJC via GoFundMe.

We also recognize that community-based and grassroots organizing is a major driving force behind sustainable and meaningful change to address the needs of stakeholders. We have also compiled a number of local organizations  that engage in meaningful and intersectional work to support APIDA communities across the US, and we strongly encourage individuals to donate towards those groups as well.

The ICAC is a collaboration of students from Boston University, Caltech, Johns Hopkins University, MIT, Princeton, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, WashU, and more. Where do I even begin?
It really saddens me to see so much hatred and anger projected onto the Asian American people. Without a doubt, there has been an uprise in assaults and hate crimes against the Asian American communities within the country. It seems like everyday, we find out that there has been a new attack, tragedy, and maybe even death... from a community member.

Why aren’t these issues being reported in the major media new outlets? Our issues are constantly being ignored and our voices continue to be silenced. I am absolutely mortified that our problems are swept under a rug. It did not help us at all when President Trump seemingly “legitimized” crimes against Asian Americans by referring to COVID-19 as the “China Virus.”

I am just an ordinary individual who wants to make a positive change, even if that means only making a dent in the world of problems. But I am only one individual... I just cannot be the only one who feels this way.

So please, any contribution to this cause is deeply appreciated. For those who cannot donate, I totally understand that everyone’s situation has changed due to this growing pandemic. By streaming a week-long virtual concert series, Senza Sord hopes to raise charitable donations towards Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, a nonprofit dedicated to providing education, legal support and civil rights advocacy for Asian Americans while building a fair and equitable society for all. Advancing Justice | AAJC aims to prevent anti-Asian violence, while empowering members of the Asian American community to be full participants in American democracy.

We hope to use the power of music to unite, inspire, and enrich a diverse group of individuals dedicated towards this worthwhile cause!

While this month we celebrate and honor those in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community whose contributions have made such a positive and lasting impact on this country, we must also acknowledge the ongoing and increasing violence to which AAPI's have been subjected. This past year during the pandemic has seen a 1900% increase in hate crimes against Asians. We cannot look away and do nothing, when so many have fallen victim to sometimes deadly acts.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice (also referred to as Asian American Justice Coalition/AAJC), with offices nationwide,  focuses on advancing civil and human rights for Asian Americans.

Hi there! I am glad you are here helping me to #stopAAPIhate by supporting Asian Americans Advancing Justice - AAJC!

I am Casper Verhoofstad and over the last couple of months I have been shocked by the increased amount of hate based on race, sexuality and gender. With the most recent discrimination against people of Asian descent (up 150%).

Now on a slightly different note... 12 months ago when the COVID-19 pandemic started I decided to run a half-marathon each month the pandemic would last, assuming it would be 2-3 months at best... this month the #12 is coming up!

I hear you thinking... where is this going… Well, I decided to dedicate the 11 (soon to be 12) half marathons to the ‘Asian Americans Advancing Justice’ and put my personal achievement to work to get your donation and support!

By the way, I almost forgot to tell you that my employer will match all donations up to $10000. This means that by donating today you have double the impact!

So far 11 half marathons in numbers (Strava):
- running 232.1 KM (144.2 MI)
- for about 20 hours (average 1:48)
- burning 15000 kcal
- embracing temperatures ranging from -6C (21F) to 23C (74F)

Dalin's Haircut for Asian Americans Advancing Justice l AAJC

With recent events in Georgia and over 3,800 reported anti-Asian hate crimes, this has been a rough year for the Asian community. 

I’m grateful for the community leaders and organizations who have been working for the rights of the Asian community long before hate crimes against Asians was a trending topic. One such organization is Asian Americans Advancing Justice l AAJC. Its mission is to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all by fighting for our civil rights through education, litigation, and public policy advocacy. This work includes programs like the upcoming virtual bystander intervention training to counter the surge in anti-Asian American discrimination.

I’ve been struggling to figure out how I can be part of the healing our community needs. I know I don’t have all of the answers or necessary expertise to fix this situation, but I do have a head of hair that hasn’t been cut for over 15 months and a wife who really wants that hair gone.

I am putting my head on the line to help raise money to power Asian Americans Advancing Justice l AAJC. For the next week, I will be actively campaigning and fundraising on behalf of this organization. Every $10 donated will count as one chance to wield your power over my head ($50 = 5 entries). I will be randomly selecting the winner next Monday, April 5, 2021, with the actual haircut/styling taking place sometime early next week.

100% of funds collected will go to Asian Americans Advancing Justice l AAJC. 

The possibilities for my future hairstyle are only limited by my current hair length, my receding hairline, and your imagination! 

Will I end up with a K-pop bowl cut or a bald top like the Padres Friar? Perhaps I’ll end up with a classic mohawk or mullet? Maybe I’ll bleach it and go Super Saiyan for a few days? You have the chance to decide!

I’m looking forward to seeing how much we can raise for this important cause.
