Jordan's walk for Amani Children's Home
At the start of September 2020 I plan to walk ~350km's from Sydney to Canberra to try raise awareness and proceeds for Amani Children's Home, an orphanage which is doing it a bit tough this year.
In 2018 I spent several weeks volunteering at Amani's Children's Home, which is located in Mto Wa Mbu in Tanzania. The orphanage is home to 49 children between the ages of 3-17; some the most resilient and happiest kids I have ever met and also great at embarrassing me on the football field. I feel that all kids should have a caring and supportive environment to grow up in, like Amani, and have access to an education to have the best chance of succeeding in life and I have been a supporter of Amani since. The kids continue to inspire me and teach me a lot about gratitude.
Unfortunately the orphanage has also suffered from the effects of COVID-19 of late. The orphanage relies upon international donations in order to operate and these donations have fallen away substantially in 2020, to the extent that financial pressures on the orphanage are meaning they are having to consider significant cost cuts to their already tight budget. The orphanage is even having to consider cuts to even the basic meals for both children and staff.
To try and help Amani through these challenging times I have decided to challenge myself - by walking 350km's from Sydney to Canberra over two weeks to try raise awareness and proceeds for Amani. Joining me on my journey will be my canine companion, my 1.5yr old husky, Craig ... I'm still yet to give him the news that he's potentially/unofficially(?) about to become the first dog to ever walk from Sydney to Canberra. He doesn't think much of his new dog shoes though.
To make the walk slightly more challenging for myself, I've also prepared a couple of pre-existing injuries:
- A few years ago I shattered my left calcanus (healbone) and then had a bone infection via the metal-wear. It took 8 surgeries to repair and save it from amputation followed by another six months before I could walk again. The foot now has some metal back in it and has limited mobility and arthritis, which causes it to ache after walking more than 10km's ... So 350km should be fun!
Aside from the foot, I have a dodgy hip that causes a bit of grief over longer distances.
I am currently training for the walk and I am quickly realizing that 350kms is going to be more of a challenge than I thought it would be - but I'm going to give it my all. All donations made will go to the Amani Foundation which is a US Registered Charity (donations tax deductible in the USA) for Amani Children's Home. I have confirmed that 100% of proceeds will go directly to Amani Children's Home and towards ensuring the children are properly cared for and supporting their educations. All costs incurred on the walk from Sydney to Canberra (e.g. equipment, food, medical, accommodation, etc.) will be covered by myself. I would also like to thank all those (pet) friendly folks that have agreed to accommodate my dog and I on the walk.
Any support is very much appreciated by both myself and all the children at Amani Children's Home. I'll be providing updates along the way for anyone who wants to follow the journey - or just to see more pictures of my dog.
