Karrold D. Jackson Social Justice Mobile Library
Support the Karrold D. Jackson Social Justice Library at Umoja Coworking Space in Anchorage, Alaska b. 9/13/38 d. 7/31/24
In honor of the late Karrold D. Jackson, a fierce advocate for social justice and beloved member of her community, we are raising funds to create the Karrold D. Jackson Social Justice Mobile Library.
Karrold's passion for promoting equality and empowering women was evident throughout her life, from her early efforts as a military wife breaking barriers on base to her later years spent supporting various causes and organizations. She believed that education and access to resources were key to creating lasting change, which is why we are dedicated to creating this library in her name.
The Karrold D. Jackson Social Justice Mobile Library will feature a diverse collection of books and resources focused on social justice, equity, and empowerment for marginalized communities. We are currently raising funds for a vehicle but have received a part-time loaner vehicle in the interim. It will also include the "KareBearCorner" a special area, dedicated to educating kids about why social justice matters.
We invite you to join us in honoring Karrold's legacy by donating to this cause. Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference in bringing this library to life. Let's continue Karrold's mission of promoting social justice and empowering others through education. Thank you for your support! #KDJLibrary #KareBearKorner
UPDATE: we reached our initial goal. And now we move onto creating a lasting legacy. Our fundraising will now focus on getting enough for our vehicle. We are estimating about $50,000 for the vehicle on top of operating expenses.
Thank you again to all of those that helped us reach our initial goal of $5000! You will share updates of the build out as they are available. We have also created a Facebook page to keep you updated in real time. https://www.facebook.com/share/Xnz55JaBwTWWqMZW/?mibextid=LQQJ4d
For those that want to know more about momma,
HerStory -
Karrold Deanne Jackson was born on September 13, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan. A proud graduate of Cass Tech High School, she discovered her lifelong passions for reading, learning, and music during her time there. Growing up during the golden era of Motown, Karrold attended school with Diana Ross and lived just down the street from the church led by Aretha Franklin’s father.
Shortly after graduating high school, she married the love of her life, Robert Jackson. Together, they built a family that included four children, four grandchildren, and multiple great-grandchildren. Karrold’s life was filled with joy and love, and she lived to witness the birth of her great-great-granddaughter—a blessing she cherished deeply.
Karrold developed a love for travel while supporting her husband’s service in the U.S. Air Force. Her experiences broadened her worldview and ignited her devotion to social justice. In the 1960s, while living in South Carolina, she took a bold stand by integrating the NCO Wives Club, cementing a lifelong commitment to equality and justice.
While Karrold’s family always came first, she was also deeply career-driven. She dedicated herself to raising her children as a stay-at-home mother until her youngest turned three. Then, in her 30s, she embarked on a remarkable professional journey. Beginning as a clerk in the personnel office at the Alaska Court System, she rose steadily through the ranks, retiring 15 years later as the department’s director. Karrold attributed her success to her love of reading, which she believed was the foundation of knowledge and growth.
Her passion for books extended beyond her own life. She was committed to ensuring children had access to literature, knowing that books could spark change and inspire movements. Now, that legacy lives on through the Karrold D. Jackson Social Justice Mobile Library. This initiative will bring the power of knowledge directly to those who need it most, continuing her mission to educate, empower, and uplift future generations.
