Help Our Youth - Join Us in Raising Funds
Looking for helpers...Want to join our family this holiday season in making a difference?
If you knew $28 would make the difference in your child's life or your friend's child, would you give that gift today?
Beginning last year, our family chooses a nonprofit to support. This year, we are raising money to benefit AHA! Attitude. Harmony. Achievement non-profit for Teens to help support their program of Cultivating a Community of Heroic Youth.
Any donation will help make an impact on today's social emotional learning for youth as they continue to grow through this pandemic experience.
Our AHA Moment - We Can Start the Doing Something Now
I believe we all will agree this has been a challenging year. Every year, I read about the increasing concerns related to mental illness. While some work has been done, we still have more work to do. A recent 2020 survey by the American Psychological Association revealed that Gen Zers are the most stressed out age group, pointing to a teen mental health crisis that has potential to only get worse. While many young people whose mental illness goes untreated based on steep health care costs or limited availability to diagnostic tools, the culprit can sometimes be the inability to feel comfortable to raise this conversation with their family until it may be too late.
The No. 2 cause of death for children and young adults from age 10 to 24 is suicide, after accidents. We face a shortage in the number of mental health professionals who are trained to work with young people. When a family may use insurance to help, it is often difficult to find an affordable path to consistent therapy.
2020 is a turning point. Let's turn the page and help support a program that will use technology for good. A program that will bring youth together in small connection circles to discuss the social emotional topics that academics does not. I have seen the reviews of this program and would love to see this happen at all schools across the United States.
Why AHA!?
AHA! offers many programs including peace building and even sustainable organic farming. But, when learning shifted online because of the pandemic, AHA! created what it calls "Heroes Assemblies." In an effort to Cultivate Heroic Youth, AHA! has brought Heroes Virtual Assemblies to several schools in their area on the West Coast. Our family would like to support the expansion of this much needed conversation nationwide.
During a virtual Heroes Assembly, teens get to hear from leaders, and celebrities like Jeff Bridges, news commentator Van Jones and many more. They record a video message for the students about life lessons, leadership qualities and what it means to be a hero during these difficult times. Then teens and teachers talk about what they learned. Dr. Jennifer Freed, Chief Content Officer at AHA! says with the pandemic and teens being isolated at home, connecting with others is more important than ever.
"All of us need role models right now. We need to believe that there are people that we can emulate and we can look up to," Freed said. "When teens see their everyday heroes and celebrities talking about what difference a simple gesture can do, that reminds them that inside of them, they have that possibility."
Check out the video in the link and learn about the conversation AHA! trained facilitators bring in connection circle settings. Faced with increasing isolation, these type of conversations are so important especially in the school setting. Our teachers and schools need help from the parents to provide this for our children. These virtual assemblies cost about $28 per student - and could be the conversation they needed that day to remind them how important they are and that they are not alone. The Heroes Assemblies have already served 3,000 students, teachers and principals. Their goal is to reach 60-thousand people next year nationwide.
Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so to us.
If you work for a school or are a part of the parent organization at your children's school and would like to bring the idea to them, please direct message me.
