Support 808 Cleanups
This is why we need your help:
Despite 808 Cleanups working harder than ever during the pandemic, the City and County of Honolulu Grant in Aid Committee recommended that 808 CLEANUPS NOT receive funding for FY21-22, resulting in a $125,000 loss of funding towards the salary of their amazing employees and leaders. By coming together and helping the leaders and employees who give so much of their time, energy, and heart, it would continue to help beautify and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture and their amazing efforts to include the community toward all of the events, clean ups, and volunteer experiences they provide.
We appreciate any donation large or small, and if you are unable to donate today, any leads to funding sources we should apply for, please let us know!
What is 808 Cleanups?
An alliance of volunteers dedicated to keeping Hawaii litter free from mauka to makai. The Adopt a Site program is a decentralized weekly monitoring program, run completely by individual volunteers at the sites they select.
Weekly goals are to remove litter, monitor any graffiti that appears on natural surfaces, and to talk story with trail and beach goers about restoring the beauty of Hawaii. For special events or large cleanups, the volunteers can call upon the community at large to assist.
The purpose of this group is to facilitate communication, provide support as needed, share success stories, working strategies, and to work toward the long term progress of minimizing human impact on the natural landscape.
Mission Statement:
808 Cleanups is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit organization committed to restoring Hawaiʻi’s natural beauty by empowering volunteers to conduct decentralized cleanups from Mauka to Makai, responding to littering and vandalism of Hawaiʻi’s natural spaces, saving Hawaiʻi’s indigenous ecosystem through education, and building sustainable solutions with community partners.

808 Cleanups App Development and Updates -
808 Cleanups built our own mobile app in 2018 that volunteers use to log data after their cleanups, create events and teams, and connect with others. Work is ongoing by our in-house app developer to continue improving the app experience. Available for both Android and Apple platforms. 808cleanups.org/app
Community built art mural sessions -
808 Cleanups hired Solomon Enos to begin leading community art murals in public parks. Solomon will initiate the design and lead community work days where the public can paint the murals.
Focus Areas:
Environmental Sustainability:
Our primary objective is to grow our stewardship programs. Over the course of one year, this will include a minimum of 500 group events, full-time support for at least 2,500 adopt a site cleanups, 24 school leadership sessions, 4 public art murals in parks, and ongoing upgrades to our 808 Cleanups App. Our activities include cleanups, graffiti removals, invasive plant removals, native tree plantings, community built art murals, and native fishpond restorations. Our environmental programs are sustainable and growing as we empower more and more community members to take action and lead by example. We serve all islands.
The needs placed on our charity and problems we address center on areas that are neglected. When we go to work on restoring and beautifying these areas, we inspire the community to step up and help. Our process is consistent and enduring, and most of all sustainable.
Educational Excellence:
With our school leadership sessions, 808 Cleanups takes the time each month to reach our keiki and help guide them in their school stewardship projects. We are proud to be a part of adding value to the education system by getting them engaged in all our field projects. We provide weekly hands-on events with service hours as well as in-class and remote teaching lessons. To help grow this progress, we plan to add a paid internship for young adults to help continue their growth.
Economic Strength:
In addition to the fulfilling careers we have created at 808 Cleanups, we want to continue being a jobs creator and provide even more opportunities for local employment in service to the community. To that end, we plan to begin a paid internship with the potential to build into more part time and full time positions. The work we do makes the islands cleaner, safer and stronger- better for families, better for business, better for economic growth and better for long-term sustainability. It’s a lot of work to maintain let alone grow this level of progress, and we have so many areas to grow in the realm of native ecosystem restoration and community beautification. We also want to do our part to make Hawai’i a technology hub, and our locally-developed app will continue to grow and gain worldwide usability.
Community Resilience:
808 Cleanups is about neighbors helping neighbors. Key to this concept is the word “Empowerment”. We challenge members to find actions big and small that make a positive difference and to act on them. Without waiting for others, or for someone else to initiate, everyone has a chance to lead in their own way. 808 Cleanups is there to help guide everyone at every level. The community wants to help restore these public spaces but often doesn’t know how to start. 808 Cleanups eliminates these roadblocks by providing 365 day a year support both through coaching, management and free supply support.
