You can make a difference by donating to 555 Nonprofit Studio/Gallery today.
Hello friends and supporters of 555 Arts . We’ve been quietly working away, and all of a sudden, 20 years of 555 Arts is upon us!! Join us in celebrating 20 years of collaborative arts and community efforts in SE Michigan!
Founded in 2002 in a run-down warehouse in Ann Arbor, 555 migrated to Detroit in 2004. After many years of renting space to operate in, we are presently working to create accessible art spaces with property we own, including a four-story brick and timber warehouse, an artist residency house, and outdoor space for art making and programming.
Unexpectedly, in October 2020, we halted our metal casting art workshop programs, where we worked with the Veteran and Returning Citizens community. In addition, our volunteer effort to work on the building also came to a stop.
As a result, we have had to step back and rethink our vision for the future of our buildings and community art spaces. But we have great news!! In doing so, we partnered with BG Lionstar , a social impact development company, and Gary Odom to re-evaluate how we can make it financially feasible. While Gary and his team work on the bigger picture, we continue renovating the artist residency house, providing a combination of living and working space for artists. Our goal is to have the residency house ready for the summer of 2023. Simultaneously we are working to stabilize our 108-year-old Banner Tobacco Building.
To celebrate 20 years of 555 Arts, we are setting a fundraising goal of $15,000 which will allow us to put some bandaids on our building that is being further degraded by the weather as well as our financial needs to catch up on our property taxes. The bandaids will include covering broken windows, painting any of our patches, buttoning up any holes the pesky pigeons find, and cleaning up the exterior of the building. If we meet our goal and have more funds, we will tackle the next interior cleaning and stabilization phase.
Join us today!! Please consider donating so we may further our efforts to bring creative programming, artist workspace, community action events and outreach to our immediate community in Detroit. Now more than ever, we need to create spaces and opportunities to bring people together through art. Thank you for being a part of our 20-year legacy!
Sincerely,
