WOLF CONNECTION is a unique educational sanctuary and wilderness center that brings people together through direct relationship with rescued wolves for the purpose of empowering the next generation to become authentic leaders and stewards of the earth. Chance and his brother Koda are high content wolf dogs that joined Wolf Connection after having been rescued from a roadside attraction in Alaska. The State of Alaska condemned the attraction and criminally charged the owner and ordered the wolves to be euthanized. Chance suffered with anxiety after enduring years of life literally tied to a post with a chain around his neck so that people could pay money to drive by and throw treats. During winter the chain froze into his fur and eventually grew into the skin of his neck rendering him sentenced to walking in one direction so as not to rip the chain through his skin…..Despite Chance’s fear at the sight of man-made objects and the physical neglect and abuse he endured, he has learned to walk on leash. He is full of love and he shares it. In fact, the very strong-bodied Chance is affectionately known as the Linebacker of Love! He tackles with playful kisses and bosses around his younger sibling, Koda, as big brothers do.
In March 2016, a precautionary exam discovered that Chance had a very aggressive tumor in his colon. His prognosis at that time was 2-6 months if untreated. Wolf Connection provided radiation treatment for Chance and, 8 months later, Chance is continuing to beat the odds. Our prognosis is that he continues to survive on a holistic approach and our loving attention to details and care. Chance seems to be thriving and continues to defy his western medicine prognosis – based on his energy, appetite, appearance and connection with his pack members.
Please help us provide Chance with more preventive measures, checking his brother Koda 2x a year at the regular vet to make sure he doesn’t have colon cancer, for Chance’s continued 6-8 week check-ups with the oncologist to ensure quality of life, and to support us in exploring holistic measures that seem to be improving his quality of life, his stamina, his exuberance.
Chance and his brother Koda have a really unique and special bond. One amazing part of this process since Chance was diagnosed is that the team was watching very carefully - knowing that when a dominant animal is sick, the submissive one might start to take over. We watched for this carefully because we wanted Chance to have every opportunity to heal and not have stress with continuing to dominate his brother in the relationship. So, while we watched for signs of this stress, what we found instead was that both of them were working so hard to maintain the status quo. So, that as hard as Chance worked to remain dominant, Koda was also making great effort to remain submissive. This continues to baffle us and at times brings us to tears at how bonded they are to keeping their loving relationship just as it is.
Chance and Koda's story and relationship teach so much to our at-risk program participants. Chance and Koda have inspired many, many people to break the chains in their lives. They inspire people to deal with situations and move on so that, even though Chance has this diagnosis, it’s obvious energetically to the wolves that things are different, they continue to move on regardless. They maintain their bond. Koda has begun to individuate and become more comfortable doing things on his own. And then they return to center which is the two of them. Program participants have learned from Chance and Koda to move through life’s changes with grace and ease.
