Champ's Medical Care

Donation protected

Champ the Nigerian Dwarf Goat was born crippled on August 27th 2016. His momma, Rose, was rescued the week before having come from a home that faced financial hardship, she lacked the nutrition needed for a healthy pregnancy. We were working hard at giving her minerals and other nutrients she desperately needed. Her pregnancy wasn't planned, her former owners leaving bucks with does, and her birth date was uncertain. 4 kids were born. 2 died. 1 survived a healthy little buckling, and then there was Champ, the tiniest of them all.

There wasn't enough room in his mother for his legs, which ended up intertwined like a pretzel, frozen in place over his back.

Our options were to euthanize, or try to help him.

A few hours after his birth a farm vet verified, "He has a tail, he has a pooper, all the bones are in his legs, he has hips and a spine. His problem isn't structural, but contracted tendon, muscle, and ligaments. "

She demonstrated therapy techniques which have helped, in addition to cold laser therapy. His legs are now straight back behind him.

He was doing splendidly, normal function, other than the hind legs. We had a mobility cart made for him by k9carts with help of the funds donated, which has served him well.

Champ had a major growth spurt, now at 14 pounds.  The way his hips are aligned, and his back legs, they are restricting proper defecation. He suddenly became bound up, and is currently in the ICU with severe bloat.

Champ now needs a second, larger cart, specifically. K9 Carts has been wonderful, designing his cart to accomidate the goat's wide belly, and reduce pressure points against the rumen. His next cart will also have front support.

Champ is also having braces made by Animal Ortho Care, to help straighten and strengthen his front legs.  A brace is also being made for his rear, to help loosen his hips, and relieve pressure of his back legs.

Continued physical therapy, including range-of-motion,  and bicycling will continue for the rest of Champ's life, including the purchase of a cold laser therapy machine to increase fluidity in his hips.

These creatures are precious, and what we learn we hope to apply to other special needs goats who need our help and care.

Your generosity, encouragment, and love sent our way have made this possible. Thank you.
