Help kids from CF go to DC!

$10,931 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 111 people in 14 months
You can help young leaders from Central Falls change the world!

My name is Seth Kolker, and I’m raising funds to help my class travel to Washington, DC. This year, some incredibly inspiring students are co-creating a brand new course with me that’s called “How to Change the World.” Budget cuts have left them with only three semesters of social studies in high school. So our trip to Washington will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from leaders in their fields. We hope to visit non-profit organizations, think tanks, museums, historic sites, cultural groups, schools, and more. And we need your help to pay for our transportation down to DC!

Background: this is my third year teaching in this amazing community. We're a city in Rhode Island that takes up one square mile and has over 20,000 inhabitants, representing 103 countries. Many are immigrants; most live below the poverty line; and all of them are part of one of the most close-knit, resilient, driven, and vulnerable communities in the state.

The goal for our course on “How to Change the World” is simple and bold: by the end of the year, each student will have a working theory of how they want to change the world. All year, we're going to meet inspiring student activists, lawyers, non-profit leaders, community volunteers, and elected officials who are working to make local change happen. And in April, we'll travel to Washington, DC for a weeklong trip students are planning themselves.

These young leaders' interests are diverse so our site visits in DC will be, too. They're curious about everything from robotics to politics to immigration to education, so they’ll design field trips in DC that align with their passions. Students will stay near DC with host families in my hometown of Arlington, VA. These hosts are old family friends. They're going to participate in a beautiful cultural exchange between two communities I've learned to call my own, as kids from one of the most marginalized parts of our nation explore their capital city.

Central Falls families work hard every day to live the American dream. Teaching here has proven to me that young people from this city - with all their grit, love, and wisdom - are going to transform their community and our globe for the better. Thank you for supporting them as they learn the skills and make the connections they'll need to change the world.

Fine print: due to some bureaucratic red tape, this GoFundMe isn’t linked directly to the district. Donations go through a third-party account to our program (so they are not tax-deductible). Please feel free to contact me with any questions about our project or how you can get involved.

Come hear students talk about the course on How to Change the World this Friday!

Huge thanks go out to everybody who supported this project. It was incredible to see so many people come together to create such a transformative experience - as much for the adults who chaperoned, hosted, or met with these awesome kids as it was for the students themselves.

The community is invited to come hear all about how the program went this year, what students learned, and how to keep the momentum going into next year!

Event Details:
Friday, June 15
from 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
at Navigant Credit Union
693 Broad Street
Central Falls, RI 02863

Please RSVP to Seth Kolker. Friends are welcome to join!

Best wishes,
Seth

The CF trip to DC leaves in six days!!!

We're packing bags, confirming logistics, and feeling the waves of excitement and gratitude wash over us. Each day, one of my students greets me with a big grin and shows me the number of days left till we leave. Thanks to you, that number is rapidly approaching zero!

I'm extremely excited to announce that CF hometown hero Viola Davis and her husband Julius have joined over 100 other donors in contributing $2,000 to our program. This Academy Award-winning actress is an inspiration to us all, and she hails from the smallest city in the smallest state of the country - just like these amazing students! We are ecstatic.

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

I have been sending email updates, and we hope to send out some hard-copy notes to donors - but GoFundMe actually doesn't supply mailing addresses or email addresses of donors. If you would like to stay in the loop (and I would very much like you to!), then please send me your email address and mailing address to seth@h2ctw.org.

Thank you!
~Seth

Today, students gave a presentation to the community about the work they've been doing for our program on How to Change the World. It was inspirational!

Jessica Vega donated $200 on the spot, the Central Falls Alumni Association announced a donation of $500, and Navigant Credit Union announced a contribution of $1,000. Thanks all around!

This GoFundMe began with a goal of $3,000 to pay for transportation, with an overall fundraising goal of $10,000. After today, we have updated our GoFundMe to reflect our overall goal and total donations to date. We are more than halfway there, and all thanks to you!

But we still need your help. Please, keep sharing this project with everybody you know who wants to help young people change the world - because in CF, they're doing it already.

Thank you again for your support!

We have just reached our initial goal of $3,000 to help kids from CF go to DC, and it's all thanks to you!!! This is a HUGE milestone that I didn't necessarily expect we would reach while still in 2017.

I've felt energized, inspired, curious, and downright amazed by the interest and enthusiasm that all of you have lent to this fundraising campaign. Thank you for that. I'm just back from visiting host families in Arlington, VA and thrilled to end the year with this project so much closer to becoming reality.

Later, we'll be sending more information about how our year is going in Rhode Island, how plans are shaping up for DC, and how we hope to raise the rest of the money needed to cover expenses beyond the bus. For now, thank you again, and may you have a very happy New Year!
