Dear friends,
As many of you already know, I will be starting my Masters of Music degree in Cello Performance at the New England Conservatory (NEC) in September of this year. The two-year program focuses on studio and ensemble work, supplemented by academic course requirements in musicology and theoretical studies, as well as electives, frequent masterclasses with guest artists, and repertoire classes.
A cello is crafted out of woods that expand and contract, even hundreds of years after it was made. It is under pressure by the strings of many pounds per square inch and spends much of its life under the stress of vibration. Over the life of an instrument’s normal use some changes will inevitably occur. Boston is a city that has both cold/dry winters, and warm/humid summers, and the two factors of the weather that most affect cellos are temperature and humidity. Cold can make an instrument crack and heat causes the glue joints to come apart and varnish to soften. Over the past months my cello has suffered damages due to dryness and humidity, and it needs to be addressed immediately. However, these repairs cost a lot of money and unfortunately I can't afford it at this moment.
This is why I’m reaching out for your support. I know it’s a lot to ask, but any donations will help get my cello the repairs it needs before I start my Masters in September. Even donations as small as $5 will help if everyone pitches in!
My cello needs a grade 'A' 94 mm bridge replacement and carving, and glue seams. Bow rehair and grip replacement, as well as strings replacement, and cleaning and polishing of the instrument. The estimated cost for these repairs at a local shop is $730-$735.
