Expanding the classrooms in Kenya

Donation protected
Grace Race Friends,

Note: This is the page for our 2016 GoFundMe campaign, which was focused on expanding the classrooms at the One27 Academy in Naivasha. We did it through the help of many individuals in our community. Thank you!  This campaign is still open for donations. If you would like to read about and contribute to our 2017 campaign to build a new kitchen at the Academy, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/building-a-new-kitchen-in-naivasha. We appreciate your help in this project!

The school, orphanage, and vocational training center in Naivasha, Kenya that you helped to build through your participation in and support of the Grace Race over the last 12 years is flourishing! Because of the hundreds of people like you that have contributed over the years, boy and girls who've lost their parents and had an extremely difficult start to life as are now living in a safe place and receiving a full education. You have helped to bring these kids hope and a bright future, and for that the Grace Race Fund and our friends in Kenya are most grateful! There are over 180 students living in the dorms and taking classes at the school, and additional students from the community attend and pay tuition to help offset the costs of running the school. Through Grace Community Church's ONEchild sponsorship program (http://www.gracecommunity.org/onechild/) many families in the greater Lowell/Boston area are providing financial support to and developing ties to the children in Naivasha.

Because of the school's growing presence in the Rift Valley and the ongoing needs of the community, they have run out of classroom space and so are in an expansion phase now, extending the classroom wings to accommodate more students. The Grace Race Fund is coming alongside Grace Community Church to assist in fund-raising for this construction. A Christmas Eve offering last year raised $19, 645, enough to pay for one building's construction and get started on the second one. We need your help to raise money to pay the remaining construction costs of approximately $12, 000. We've set a goal to raise $5,000 by July 1st, so that when I visit Naivasha with my Mom in early August we'll have a nice gift to give Bishop Kimemia and his staff overseeing the school.

There is no Grace Race per se this year. You can see my thoughts on this in the blog at www.gracerace.org, and we will consider bringing it back someday in a new venue. Because I and some other Grace Race folks are hooked on running and love to participate in local events, we don't sit still and we are forming a Grace Race running team to run in the Westford Road Race on May 1st - http://www.westford.com/roadrace/. We want you on the team to help us reach our goal. You can run or walk the 5K or 10K race, and/or participate in the family fun run, which is perfect for parents with younger kids that like to run. Don't worry about your pace, your fitness level, or your training regimen. We're not out to win awards (far from it) ... the point of this is to come together, have some fun on a Sunday afternoon this spring, and raise a good chunk of money to allow more kids to receive a first-class education in a very need community of Kenya.

Are you in?! All you need to do is register for the Westford Road Race at the website above, send this link to your family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, and dust off your running shoes. Any donation amount is appreciated and all the money we raise goes directly via our non-profit organization the Grace Race Fund Inc. to the project in Naivasha, with no overhead. From directing the Grace Race I've learned that many small donations add up to a big number, enough to buy land and build a complete orphanage and school!

All donations are tax-deductible, The Grace Race Fund Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization,
EIN: 35-2322508.

This is our first venture into the concept of a Grace Race running team. If this event goes well, we might consider doing more races as a team in the future, but let's start small with this Westford race and go from there.

Below is a photo showing where the new classroom buildings are being constructed, and then a sampling of photos taken on a trip that Grace Community Church made last summer to visit with the kids in Naivasha.

Thanks so much for reading. We hope to see you on May 1st and please spread the word!

Sincerely,

John Feehrer / The Grace Race Fund

The new classrooms will extend the existing classroom wings as shown here.
