New GoFundMe update:
The original plan with this fund was to pay for the Lowell Sun ad and any additional funds were to go to the Warehouse/Truck Driver fund. On August 4, 2014, this Ad fund was closed and the monies were sent out to pay for the ad and the balance was mailed to the Warehouse/Truck driver fund. Unfortunately, not having an awareness of IRS tax rules. The warehouse fund could not accept the check for $16,655.31. IRS rules state that a max of $14,000.00 can be donated by any individual. Although these funds came from many, the IRS see's the donation as only from me (the signature on the check). I received the check back from the warehouse fund a couple weeks later, stating this IRS issue and I was welcome to reissue a check for $14,000.00. I immediately reached out (on the FaceBook page) Save Artie T and Market Basket, for someone from the warehouse fund to contact me. At that point the Warehouse GoFundMe page had already been closed down. In a day or two I did talk to a Warehouse fund representative. I was told over the phone, that the drivers/workers were back to work, and the funds were not really needed. He also stated, if I sent another check for the IRS maximum of $14,000.00 after the split, each worker/driver would receive about $20.00 each and it would be an accounting nightmare. They, at the warehouse fund thought the funds would be better used elsewhere and suggested that I send the $14,000.00 to Bella (the 12 year girl who was hit by a car while boycotting in front of one of the stores). I contacted Bella's mother and lawyer and found that there was indeed a great need for financial help. The funds were redirected to help with Bella's recovery. Again, due to the IRS rules, and trying to avoid any future issues with taxes, I sent a check for $14,000.00 to Bella and her mom. The remaining funds I was to send to the lawyer to help pay some of Bella's medical bills.
After posting the new plan on both Market Basket FaceBook pages on October 2, 2014, there was a major backlash for not following the original plan. Although, there were many negative comments posted about the funds going to Amy (Bella's mother) for Bella's care. Many more comments came to me that were positive. I did put a stop payment on the Treasurers check and did not send the remaining funds to Bella’s lawyer, as there were a small number of donors who wanted and requested a refund.
Due to the stop payment on the $14,000.00 Treasurers check, bank rules have imposed a three month freeze on the funds. The funds will not be available until early January.
The Warehouse fund representative I have been speaking with has stated repeatedly they cannot accept the funds and would like to see the excess funds donated to the care of Bella. Bella was hit by a car as a direct result of supporting the boycott at a New Hampshire store with her grandmother (an associate of Market Basket). Bella’s recovery is slow and she will endure another surgery next week. Also, Bella's mom had to leave her job soon after the accident to care for Bella at home.
Due to the backlash concerning the funds going directly to Bella’s mother, I have spoken to Bella’s attorney and he is willing to accept the funds and disperse them only for Bella’s needs.
If you are opposed to your donation being redirected to Bella’s lawyer for her recovery, please make a request for your donation to be refunded. GoFundMe rules state a refund will be honored if requested within 90 days from the date of your donation. This leaves 10-11 days to make your request.
I would like to thank everyone again for such a successful Ad campaign!
New update on the excess funds to follow.
I do NOT want a refund. Please give it to Bella to help her.
I'm glad to have my donation go to Bella ' s family to help them cover what must be overwhelming expenses. Wishing them all the best.
Keep what we were able to give and hopefully it will get to Bella and her mum
Such a said state of affairs! Don't be discouraged by the few, continue to act as you have with heart and dedication. But to be honest, I am most comfortable with the attorney having the funds to disperse as he agrees with. Although I have no doubt Bella's mom would act responsible, I can understand some having issues with it. I think this is the best of the whole situation: we have our MB back, the truck drivers are working, we have Artie T back, Bella's expenses and potential future needs are lessened. No refund needed here!
So sorry that this had become so difficult for you. I appreciate you trying to do a good thing and I think you will put the money toward a worthy cause....no refund for me. Thanks for getting involved and trying to do a good thing.
Please keep my money. Sorry that there is all this confusion. It will work out. Thank you for everything you have done and all the time you have devoted to this.
It was a privilege to donate. It is with gratitude for all of the positive outcomes from the Market Basket boycott that I without reservation support the distribution of funds to Bella. Shame on those who don't see the connection.
No refund all good
No refund here either. You did an outstanding job with this. Sorry you had so much grief for a while. Bottom line; We have our Market Baskets back !!!!!! Thank you for your hard work, Denise.
My goodness....the IRS has it's hands in EVERYTHING ! I guess we've all learned something about fund raising and tax laws. I was one of the earliest to fund the ad. It did its job and I accept the plan to turn the funds over to the Attorney for Bella's care.
Please send my funds to Bella. I do not want a refund.
Denise: I am so sorry for the headache you have gotten for your well- intended act of charity. Please use my money for Bella. Shame on the people who have criticized you for getting caught in the middle. Meanwhile, isn't it nice to shop at Market Basket again. Almost hard to believe the Artie T strike ever happened. So glad it ended as it di.
I cannot believe that people want their money back. Please, please use the money to help this little Bella. She will be in my prayers as she struggles to recover. God Bless you, too, for all you have been through, for trying to do a good deed.
Please give the money to Bella in any way you can. I do not want a refund. God bless you for taking on this task!
OMG....no good deed goes unpunished.....DO NOT send me a refund...Denise please take care of Bella and her caregivers... the wearhouse workers have spoken
I AM SURE YOU WILL DO THE RIGHT THING WITH THE DONATIONS. I GAVE TO A GREAT CAUSE WHEN YOU NEEDED HELP. I DO NOT LIVE NEAR A MARKET BASKET BUT I WAS WITH YOU ALL. IT IS TO BAD IT BECAME A LEGAL/TAX MESS TRYING TO HELP OTHERS. Denise, Thank you for all your hard work and caring for others.
but wait! i want to contribute!
How many ads will be running and when?
The customer is the final word for every company. I am a 50 year customer. I will not spend a dime until Artie T returns. Even if it gets sold to another chain.I will boycott that chain. We are winning this. MB is losing millions per day. And problems mount. Keep it up!
I support Artie T., and all Market Basket workers. But I still must shop there. My food dollar only goes so far, and I need the savings that Market Basket has always offered. When I went there. There was no disrespect from ANY workers, or supporters outside. This is why Market Basket must remain whole. The sheer friendship of all workers. Makes Market Basket the best place for food shopping, PERIOD! I hope to continue to shop there. Bring back Artie T! And end this feud.
