Lions Club 160 ft Flag Pole
We have started a fund raiser for a FLAG POLE that will be the largest flag pole in Michigan. We had an old water tower (150ft) that was in our city park on Lake St Clair at the north edge of Anchor Bay. It was a beacon for boats to find their way back to New Baltimore by day or night. We had to tear it down due to safety issues. It would have cost $350,000 to repair and paint the tower. That was too much money to save it.
The New Baltimore Lions Club earlier this year decided to start this fund raiser to replace the tower with a 160 foot flag pole and the flag will be 30ftX60ft. There will be lights at the bottom of the flag pole and a red avaition light on top of the pole.
Having a large flag would be a patriotic symbol and it would be one of the largest flag pole in Michigan. If you Google it you will find Tawas City currently has a flag pole that is at 141 ft. There is a car dealer in Redford Township has 154ft pole. So our Lions Club decided to aim for160ft for this replacement beacon and land mark.
To kick off this fund raiser our club has dedicated $10,000. We will be going to other community groups to gain support. Any and all help will be appreciated. Our new goal is $102,000. All extra money will go to providing extra back-up flag replacements. Our original dedication was planned for Memorial Day but due to our lack of money we are now targeting the installation in the month of September, 2016.
We hope you can help us meet our goal.
The price would be a total installed price with electrical.
Ron Earle is a Lions Club Member and Chair for the project.
Special Markings will be placed at the base of the Flag Pole to commemorate all major donations of $1,500 or more.
Our planned Dedication is October. Please watch the Voice Newspaper for details.
Thanks to all that have Donated!!!!!!
The dig for the foundation has been requested for September. Will let you know the dig date when we hear back from the Flagpole company. Dedication date will be set after the Pole is installed. I will try to give everyone 2 weeks notice on the dedication date. We have the money to take delivery of the pole. We need the rest of the goal to pay for the cement, electrical work, extra flag and first year maintenance contract. Please help us reach our goal and get the flag up and flying!!!!!
Extra steel, concrete, a maintenance contract for the first year, 2 tree replacements and the contractor doing the dig have all added to the costs. We hope to have all the money in or committed by Sept 1st. It has been a long road to get to this point. If you are still thinking of participating in this fund raiser, Please send it in asap.
Thank-you to all that have donated!!! We will be flying the big flag real soon. We hope to give at least 2 weeks notice for the dedication ceremony.
Tom, Since I missed both Memorial Day and the 4th of July for a dedication, I am getting conservative on naming a date for the dedication. As soon as the hole gets drilled and cement poured we will be able to plan better. I'm trying to get 3 engineers to agree on the plan. Last week we (the Lions Club) are shooting for Aug 13 which is the Music On the Bay event in the W&M Burke Park. We hope to see it up and flying then. And maybe that will be the official Dedication. But I like your idea. I will run it by the Lions Club at our next meeting.
Ron, would it be possible to organize a gaint "Flag Parade" in conjunction with the flag project installation...
Yes as of 06-27-16 our target is $85,000. We had to raise it because of the soil conditions in the park. Normal installs for 160ft flagpoles is 16ft in the ground with 7 ft diameter hole filled with concrete. (Around 60 yards of concrete. The engineers now say we need 30 ft deep hole. Increase
Initially the target was at $65,000 with a current quote of $60,000 to install and now we're up to $85,000.
Hope you all can help with this fund raiser!!!!!! You can also find this on Newbaltimorelions.com WEB site. Thanks for your Help!!!!
