Help C.A.T.S Robotics Team get to Internat’l Open

We are a team of 4 self-driven kids competing in the 2018-2019 FIRST Lego League Into Orbit robotics competition. C.A.T.S. is an acronym of our names- Cole, Alice, Thomas and Sasha. We went to Spokane Public Montessori together in prior years and now we are at 4 different middle schools. Several of our schools do not have FIRST Lego League teams this year so we formed our own team that meets at Thomas’ house and we connect on Google Hangouts.

What we are doing:
Our team won both the Robot Performance Award and the Champion’s Award at the FIRST Washington Eastern Qualifier Tournament in December and advanced to the Eastern Washington State Championship, where we won the Project Innovative Solution Award for our project on shielding astronauts from the dangerous effects of radiation using water. At the state championship we were also invited to submit our radiation project for consideration to the FIRST Lego League Global Innovation Award and our team was selected to travel to the FIRST Lego League Legoland California International Open in Carlsbad, CA, which takes place May 17-19. If our radiation project is selected to be a semi-finalist for the Global Innovation Award we will need to travel to Washington D.C. in June.

Why it matters:
Competing in FIRST Lego League not only helps prepare us for future work in STEM, but also teaches us the soft skills such as teamwork, competing under pressure, dealing with conflict, goal-setting and project management that are essential to success in any career.

How you can help:
We need to raise money to travel to Carlsbad in May to compete in the International Open. We will need airfare, meals and lodging while we are there, entry fee, and to get our robot, attachments, and other competition materials there. These costs will be about $750 per team member, and there are four of us, so we will need about $3,000. If we also get chosen to compete as semi-finalists for the FIRST Lego League Global Innovation Award in June we will need to raise money for that as well, but we won’t find out about that until April.
