Catherine Malatesta tragically died on August 2, 2015.  She was 16 years old and was about to enter her senior year of high school.  She was an otherwise extremely healthy person up until the day she was diagnosed with Stage IV epithelioid sarcoma in December 2014.  Sadly, Catherine passed away a mere 8.5 months after she was diagnosed and after she had to withstand many months of grueling chemotherapy treatments, 38 days of radiation, losing her hair, losing her energy, missing out on all of the great times of one's junior year in high school.  The disappointments piled up but that never quelled Catherine's infinite hope and optimism.

Catherine was truly a beautiful person inside and out. She was the very best part of us.  We loved her zest for life, her huge heart, her determination, her loyalty, her desire and ability to make everyone comfortable and at ease, her generosity, her brilliant smile, her quick wit and her amazing singing voice. Catherine was very dedicated to her faith and was a first grade CCD teacher at St. Agnes Parish in Arlington, MA. She was Student Council President, captain of the field hockey team, rowed crew, sang in her high school's honors Madrigals chorus and acted in the high school plays.  We are so proud of Catherine and the way, at 16, she handled her Stage IV cancer diagnosis with such maturity, grace, optimism and hope. Never will we meet a stronger or braver person. Catherine leaves behind an incredible spirit and legacy.  Catherine is our warrior. Our hero. Our angel.

Catherine left behind her mother and father, two beautiful younger brothers, her grandparents, many aunts and uncles, cousins and, of course, amazing friends who would wear her prom dress to honor Catherine's memory!

Catherine J. Malatesta Scholarship

This scholarship has been established for two local high school students, a male and a female, who choose a four year college or university, and whose experience in high school mirrored Catherine’s in that they excelled at varsity sports, the performing arts and were natural leaders and/or volunteers.

Please consider a donation in Catherine's memory to carry on her legacy and to enable other students to pursue the dream of college that Catherine could not.

Thank you so very much for your consideration!

Happy Holidays.

Thank you so much for your very generous donation to Catherine's gofundme account. Currently we are using these funds for operating expenses for the a CATpella Festival to Belt Out Cancer. Your donation will help us to ensure that 100% of the proceeds from tickets purchased and online auction items bid on will go directly to the Sarcoma Foundation of America or the Catherine J. Malatesta Scholarship Fund. You can't imagine how helpful this is as we strive to make inroads into detecting sarcoma cancer before it presents as Stage IV and in finding a cure. We so appreciate your donating in Catherine's memory.

Thank you again for thinking of us and for remembering Catherine. We hope you can attend a CATpella 2018.

Much love,

Jen and Gregg

Thank you so very much for your very thoughtful and generous donation in 2016 to the Catherine J Malatesta scholarship fund. We were able to award the first two scholarships last June to two of Catherine's dear friends and classmates. We have raised approximately $75,000 this year. This will allow us to award two $2500 scholarships every year into perpetuity. Spreading Catherine's incredible light and spirit to others for a very long time is very comforting to us. Thank you so much for your part in this!

I just ran across your site from a SFA email. Wow, your beautiful Catherine’s story hit me on so many levels. What an incredible inspiration both before and after so very sadly getting ill. I have a 14 year old daughter so can only imagine what you must have gone through. I also have a husband fighting the osteosarcoma battle. Your charities in her name are all awesome. I feel honored to contribute.❤️
