Linacre Ladies that Lift
on behalf of Helen Catherine Walter
Help empower women through heavy lifting!

Many people think that students at the University of Oxford are young, rich, male, pale, heterosexual and not disabled.  In fact, many students at Oxford do not fit these stereotypes.

The Linacre Ladies that Lift powerlifting club welcomes Oxford University women, cis and trans, and people with complex gender identities that include ‘woman’, of all ages, from all social classes and of all abilities and disabilities.  We are based in Linacre College, perhaps the most ethnically diverse College in the University of Oxford.  Powerlifting makes us strong, confident and persevering.  See a ten-minute video about our club here:  https://vimeo.com/270759981  Some of us lift for  fitness and personal development; some of us compete nationally and internationally. Most of our members are students, and some struggle financially to participate in the club. So far we have never excluded anyone on the basis of ability to pay.

Our club captain, Dr Catherine Walter, is going to be 72 years old on October 3rd.  On that day, Catherine will attempt to deadlift a total of 7200 pounds in an hour, by deadlifting her own bodyweight 55 times.

Please support Catherine and our club so that we can:

- subsidise expenses for students who can't afford full fees (£5 = one student session)

- buy equipment (£35 = a pair of spinlock collars to hold the weights on the bar; £60 = a powerlifting belt to share between members; £150 = a second lightweight Olympic-sized bar so women who are not used to lifting weights can begin to do so)

- cover travel and accommodation expenses for competitions (£225 = travel and accommodation for one of the student members who has qualified for the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation Championships in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2018)

Dear Lovely Donors to the Linacre Ladies that Lift,

Thanks to you, we did wonderfully at the World Championships in Glasgow! Four of us are now 2018 World Champions in our age/bodyweight categories: Polly Thisdell, Junior under 50.5kg; Eva Masmanian, Junior under 63kg, Therese Hopfenbeck, Masters 2 under 55.5kg, and Catherine Walter, Masters 7 under 58.5kg. Lina Girdvainyte, Open under 53kg category, also performed well in a strong field. So thank you, thank you, thank you.

...and there has been an unexpected benefit from this GoFundMe campaign: the British media have got hold of it, and Catherine Walter has been interviewed several times online, in newspapers and on the radio to promote women's powerlifting . This BBC video has had over 5 million views https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-oxfordshire-45578505/oxford-academic-71-a-champion-powerlifter, and Catherine is going to participate in the BBC Radio 4 programme 'Saturday Live' this Friday (17th Nov, 09.00-10.30). So your generous gifts have also inspired many more women to get healthier and live longer by lifting heavy weights. Again, thank you!

Dear Supporters,
We have now reached, and exceeded, our stretch goal, thanks to your kind generosity.
Oh, and Catherine did meet the challenge - she completed the 7200 lbs in a little over 30 minutes, and then did a bonus set of 5 lifts (660 lbs) as a kind of lap of honour. It was a friendly and joyful occasion. Thanks to those of you who were able to come; for those who weren't, we're attaching a picture of Catherine's birthday cake :).
We are deeply touched by your willingness to support us, and we will do all we can to honour your confidence in us.
Meeting our goal means that all of the student team members who have entered the World Championships in Glasgow at the beginning of next month will be able to go. This means a lot to these students individually, and to us as a team. We will leave this GoFundMe page open, not to ask for more donations, but to update you on the Glasgow results!
We also have our eyes on some equipment that will make it easier for beginners and women with disabilities to lift safely and with benefit, and for all team members to progress in their lifting.
We are putting the money from this campaign in a special account, so that it will only ever be used for the purposes specified in our appeal. We may well find that some Linacre Ladies qualify for next year's Nationals and Worlds, and this fund will be very useful in that case.
Thank you again for donating! You have a special place in our hearts!
Warmest best wishes,
Isabel, Brandi, Dina, Claire, Therese & Catherine
(the fundraising team)
and all the Linacre Ladies that Lift

Hello lovely donors! We're writing to update you on some exciting news. Our campaign has gained traction in the press, with the latest items being on BBC online https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-oxfordshire-45578505/oxford-academic-71-a-champion-powerlifter and the Oxford Mail https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/16903400.powerlifting-oxford-professor-proves-its-never-too-late-to-lift/ an including a lovely article in the Independent online https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/powerlifting-catherine-walter-weight-training-strength-women-oxford-university-a8512766.html. This is great to spread the word about powerlifting for women and older people! Unfortunately it hasn't generated any donations, but your lovely generosity has us approaching our goal now, so thank you very very much. Please come to Catherine's birthday event on 3 October at 5pm at Linacre College, or watch the livestream http://bit.ly/2Ik7fi4

A massive thank you to all our donors so far!

The campaign is doing tremendously well, thanks to the generosity of you all.

We have therefore decided to raise our target to £2000, which will help us to cover even more lifting-related activities and expenses.
