Help Carter Beat Leukemia

Donation protected
Carter is an active 10 year old boy who loves to spend time with his sister and friends.  His passion is playing sports and being part of a team.  He has played baseball for 7 years through Spartanburg D5 and travel teams, soccer for 3 years at CESA of Greenville, basketball for 3 years with D5, as well as football for a year with D5.   After taking a year long break from soccer, he started playing with Carolina FC this August.

His family had the best summer, packed full of baseball games, swim parties, visitors from PA, and vacations.  Carter was excited to start fall baseball and play soccer with his new teammates.

As Carter does with everything, he was "giving it all" during soccer practice, and after 2 days of conditioning, complained of groin pain.A trip to the doctor, x-ray, and physical therapy assessment resulted in walking with crutches to avoid pain.

By Friday, he went to school with no crutches (later he discovered the pain was caused by Leukemia).  After a long first week of school, he took a nap, and woke with stomach pain.  He ate dinner and watched Netflix with his family.  Saturday, he woke with an upset stomach, ate breakfast and took another nap.  This time he woke with nausea, and pain.  As his pain increased, his parents knew something was wrong, and his mom took him to the ER.  They did blood-work , and an ultrasound.  His appendix was normal, but his blood-work was not.  The ER team ordered a transfer to the Children's Hospital in Greenville, but his mom was able to drive him.  Tests were done through the night, and into the the next day, and on August 26, 2018 he was diagnosed with Pre-B ALL Leukemia.  The following day he had surgery to place a port, do a lumbar puncture (spinal tap), bone marrow aspirate/biopsy and chemo treatment.

Carter's initial hospital stay was 11 days, and he has a long 3 and half year journey ahead.  During this time, he will be restricted from contact sports, and swimming in oceans or lakes, among other things.  It will be several weeks before Carter can return to school, and with flu season approaching, that may be even longer.

Carter's parents have been told that one of them should be with him night and day for the next 6 months, so only one parent will be able to work.  He has been so brave and strong, and we are so proud of him, and are inspired by his strength and character.  He and his family are lifted by the support and love from their community, and are living out his motto "one step at a time".
