Carson's Crusade Against Leukemia

Donation protected
Join us to support Carson Dimsdale in the crusade against his AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia).

If you have ever met Carson you would know how special he really is. He is a brilliant 7 year old boy who has always been bright for his age. He can be a little awnry at times, as can any kid his age, but he is the sweetest child I have ever met. He loves giving hugs and always finds a way to make you smile. He loves his family and God more than anything and lets everyone know how much he loves them. He can be really silly and will often sing little songs he comes up with. He loves the color green and Legos as well as Skylander's, Power Rangers, and other fun things but has plenty of gifts for Christmas. Carson and the rest of his family are OU fans so although the official color for Leukemia is orange, you can call us Team Green

What  Exactly  Does He Have?
Although Cancer SUCKS, we are going to do our best to fight it. There are a lot of different types and even more subtypes below those. Initially we found out that Carson has Leukemia, a special type of cancer. If you want to learn more about what Leukemia is, this is a helpful video to understand it in simple terms: Leukemia (Link to a short TED-Talk).  On Monday, December 19th, we found out that Carson has a type of Leukemia called AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). If you would like to learn more about it here is a useful website: AML

How Did We Find Out?
On Friday, December 16th, Carson was brought to the pediatrician after having had a low-grade fever and leg pain for about a week. We all had been feeling a little sick so we assumed it was just a bug going around or maybe the flu at worst. Since he wasn't feeling better yet we took him to the doctor just to be safe. We never expected this news. The routine bloodwork showed an extremely elevated White Blood Cell (WBC) Count of 129,000/mm3 compared to the normal range of 5,000-10,000/mm3. As soon as he saw the results, the doctor knew it was leukemia and told Kori and Will to take him immediately to OU Children's Hospital. Once there, more tests were done to confirm that he does in fact have Leukemia and he was admited to the Pediatric Oncology Unit here at The Children's Hospital.

How Is He Doing Now?
We will be posting updates to the GoFundMe page as well as to the Facebook Page, so for the most up to date information on how he is doing check those. As of Tuesday, December 20th, He is still feeling happy and isnt acting or looking sick. However, he started his chemotherapy at 8:00pm Monday, December 19th and will begin to feel progressively sicker as the chemo does its job. Although this will be a difficult process, it is necessary for him to get better.  Already his WBC Count is down from 129,000/mm3 to 51,000/mm3. Because of this treatment, his immune system will be shot so we ask that no one but family comes to visit for now and if anyone is feeling even a little sick to keep their distance for his safety. It is also important to not send flowers. They can harbor fungal spores that can place the patients at risk. Because of how aggressive AML can be and how badly it affects their immune system, Patients often stay in the hospital until treatment is over. This means if things go well he will get out in 6-7months but it could go even longer.

How Can You Help?
As you know staying in the hospital is very expensive, especially with a case like Carson's where he will be here for months. Insurance can only pay for so much. On top of this, Kori will need to take off work to stay here with him so he is never alone in a hospital and is always taken care of.  That means on top of their added expenses, their income will be effectively cut in half. The BEST way to help is to keep Carson in your thoughts and prayers and to donate to this campaign. All the money from this GoFundMe is set up to go straight to Kori and Will to help make sure they can worry about keeping Carson alive and healthy rather than worry about money. Carson has recieved plenty of donated toys and already has the ones from his family under the tree which we have moved to the hospital. Although it is Christmas time and everyone wants to donate toys, what matters most is making sure they can focus on his health and not bills.
