I have a genetic condition that is causing my spine to collapse crushing my brainstem and leaving me with catastrophic damage. There are no treatment options available for me in the UK so my only hope is life-saving neurosurgery in Spain.

Time is running out as my condition is now in the advanced stage which means I MUST have this surgery this year (2018) or I may not survive. This leaves me with just a few months to raise the entire amount.

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which has caused my entire digestive system to fail, my joints to dislocate easily, my spine to collapse and my brainstem to become crushed. Every system in my body is affected from my heart, immune system, nervous system and more. I am losing my sight for the second time, am fed directly into my heart and require 24hr care.

I have developed a complication called Cranio-Cervical Instability which means my spine in my neck is too weak to hold the weight of my head. This is causing dangerous dislocations in the neck which can result in an internal decapitation. The condition is causing me to lose my memory, struggle with basic cognitive tasks, it is causing sight loss, balance problems, and could go on to develop seizures, paralysis and even death.

There is no surgery options here in the UK for me so my only choice is a wonderful neurosurgeon in Spain who is treating people with EDS. Surgery will fuse my entire neck so I will loose all movement in my neck, but it will put a halt to my deteriorating symptoms. The surgery and associated costs come to £100k which is why I need your help.

Carries surgery went according to plan on Thursday 6th September. She was in surgery for 9 hours and ICU until the following day. She is now recovering in her hospital room. Her pain is bad, but the doctors and nurses are keeping her as comfortable as possible.
Before going down for surgery, Carrie developed an infection and low blood clotting and anaemia. This, combined with other complications meant the infectious disease specialist and surgical team deemed the second part of the surgery too high risk (tethered chord) at the moment. So Carrie will return at a later date once she has recovered from the main surgery.

Thank you so much to everybody who donated to Carrie’s Fund, and to those who shared Carrie’s story.

I never thought this day would come. I am currently in my wheelchair van in the middle of France heading for Spain!
Two amazing friends, Pete and Dave volunteered to drive Lisa and I to Spain when it became clear flying was no longer an option due to how unstable I am now. They drove all way from Shetland Island to our home on Scottish Border and on to Barcelona.

We set off yesterday morning with a night stop at folkstone before boarding Channel tunnel first thing this morning. The plan is to keep driving through the night so we get there early Monday.

We’ve had a few minor medical hiccups and one neck dislocation which jolted me awake paralysed and unable to feel any of my body. I’m ok now but I can’t wait till those sudden paralysing dislocations are a thing of the past.

Another scary thing that’s happening is when I wake up after a nap in the car I have no idea where I am. It takes about 10 minutes for me to figure out where I am, what is happening and why. I’m very confused and scared. I guess before now I’ve woke up in my bedroom for the last 3 months of being bedridden so it was always the same. I didn’t get confused then because my brain could recognise my surroundings.

It’s moments like this I know I’m doing the right thing and taking the risk I am to try to save what functions I still have.

Thank you so much for your donation and support. Without you I wouldn’t be watching the beautiful French landscape as I head towards Hospital “Hope” as I call it.

There is just £10k left to raise to cover both parts of my life-saving surgery. Please keep sharing my story.

I am so excited to tell you that an annonymous donor has ensured we have reached the minimum target of £75k.

Ths means I have enough to pay for the main surgery and I can definately head for Barcelona on Sep 1st!

Thank you so much to everyeone who has helped me get this far. Every single donation, no how big or small has been important. Every person who is supporting me has made a difference, every share, comment and orivate message has got me here.

I still need to raise the remaining £25k for the second part of the surgery to fix the damaged spinal chord at the lower spine. But at least my main surgery can go ahead and fuse my skull and spine so no further damage can be done to my brain.

Thank you everyone.

We are just over a week away from our deadline. We have two wonderful volunteers driving us to Barcelona from our home on the Scottish Border. We have everything booked and ready to go.

But...

We cannot leave unless we have the minimum £75k to pay for the main surgery and Carrie’s TPN and accomodaton.

We need just £17k to reach that target.

We will worry about the second part of the surgery and the £25k needed for that once we get there.

From Carrie :

Thank you to everyone who has donated. Asking strangers for money is the hardest thing I had to do. Knowing we are so close but still not enough is awful. There are no words to say how scared I am that we won’t make it.
We have sold what we can. We no longer have a sofa, table or chairs, warddrobes, spare bed for carers and family. We have sold soecial gifts, wedding gifts, sentimental things, i have auctioned off the last of my original art work from my career as an artist. I have no reminders now of the work I created then.

My body and mind are so strange to me now. I don’t recognise any. I have nebuliser thumping away by my bed, machines beeling and whirring feeidng me and putting medication into my heart. I ask wife for help By pressing buttons on my ipad and I can’t follow simple conversation with her. She talks about this much money and we need that much money and this date and that date but I don’t understand any of it. I just know that we can’t go yet. That we not there yet. That we need more money if I can get my surgery and get my mind and my memories back.

I forget I can’t walk. I forget I can have pain tablet to make the pain go away. I forget I can’t eat. I forget that I forget things.

But hardest in all this is watching Lisa my wife struggle so much trying to organise everything. The phone never stops ringing, she needs to pack for our trip, she has bank to sort, facebook posts to write, fundraising to organise, its non-stop. I try remind her to eat but I forget. I just want to be her wife again and help and support her. We work best as a team but right now I can’t help her. Thats what is hardest.

Please keep donating. Please keep sharing.

We can do this.
