INTRODUCTION

My name is Pascal Gangi and I am a graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology with a degree in Electrical-Mechanical Engineering. I was born in Sciacca, Sicily and moved to Revere at a very young age. My Sicilian heritage is something that I hold dear to my heart and I admire the art work that is presented in many of the traditional feasts from my hometown of Sciacca. Six years ago, I started an art group called “A Little Taste of Sicily” that proudly celebrates and promotes Italian Culture in the Boston area, largely due to the support of another cultural organization, Italia Unita. Being a proud member of La Madonna Del Soccorso Society, I brought my passion and love of float building to the Fisherman Feast.

The art group which is compiled of various volunteers from the Boston area. Our mission is to bring the art tradition and techniques from Sciacca, Sicily to Boston through the construction of giant paper Mache floats that showcase art works at local events and parades. We have been able to build floats to display for the community thanks to fundraising and donations from organizations, the public, and private companies.

Previously,  we have displayed our floats and artwork at the East Boston Columbus Day Parade in 2010, 2012 and 2014; the Revere and North End Columbus Day parade in 2013, and 2015; Wakefield Fourth of July parade in 2010 and 2011, and at  the North End Fisherman Feast from 2012-2015. We have also organized two Carnevale events to represent Italian culture at Spinelli’s and Zumix in East Boston with the non-profit organization Italia Unita. At these events, a local dance center has showcased both American and Italian styles of dance. Our successful efforts have been featured by local news outlets as well as on Italian Rai Television.

Proposed Carnevale Project for 2016

For the Fisherman’s Feast in the North End in 2016, the artistic group is currently working in bringing a little taste of the Carnevale tradition from Sciacca to the North End. The Carnevale in Sciacca calls for the parade of the float accompanied by its traditional music, Dance group and a Comedia dell’ Arte group.

Just like the actual tradition, the art group will build a float (image shown on right). The float represents a fisherman sitting on a boat in honor of the fisherman’s feast. The float dimensions will be 4 feet in width, 12 feet in height and 8 feet in length.

Accompanying the float for the mini parade will be Beverly Richards Dance Center who will perform not only on the street but on stage. Also on stage, there will be a special Comedia dell’ Arte performed by the Pazzi Lazzi Troupe.  We hope to get many people involved especially the kids. We hope to pull together a great cultural and fun show and to make everyone enjoy this fantastic tradition. Below are a few photos of our past floats and events.
