In loving memory of Carlos Medina

Easter is supposed to be a time of new beginnings.  For my sister, Holly Medina, it became an all too real moment in her life.  Her husband, Carlos Medina, was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma in spring of 2018.  The primary site was in his leg, which had to be amputated.  The sarcoma swept through his body, settling in his lungs, making playing with his young son, CJ, or even just getting up and down the stairs an impossible feat on some days.
Yet still, Carlos and Holly hoped, believed, and prayed that there was a treatment out there to slow the progress of this aggressive cancer.  His insurance refused to pay for his prosthetic leg, which would have made life a little more bearable and easier to get around.  But Carlos and Holly's faith persisted.  They tried experimental treatments at MD Anderson to no avail.
Finally the cancer overtook Carlos' lungs, and he spent 5 days intubated on a ventilator saying goodbye to family and friends.  After a long, hard crusade against this cancer, it was time.  Carlos was sedated and painlessly slipped away after the ventilator was removed.
My sister Holly and her young son, CJ, were left behind to start their new beginning this holy week of Easter. Carlos touched many peoples lives with a smile, big bear hug, and positive outlook.  He always lived in the moment, like it was his last, without ever knowing  that at 43 years old it would be cut short.
