Caring for Faith

Faith was brought to Retrievers and Friends May 11, 2016. We received a call from our good friends at animal control. They had been trying to help this dog for over a year. She was living on the run, always able to avoid being caught. She was seen dodging cars and cruel people throwing rocks and trash at her as she ran through the fields in fear for her life. Being on the run was taking its toll on her. Her left leg was now severed and hanging. At some point part of the leg fell off and a bloody stump was left. As if life can't be worse for this precious dog she then gave birth to a litter of pups under a shed sometime late March. She was trying hard to protect the pups as the coyotes are thick in this area. She was able to save 3. We can't stand to think of what she had to endure watching what must have happened to her babies. Animal Control set a trap knowing she was caring for the babies and would be very hungry. The plan worked and she was now in the trap. As she arrived at RFSC, still in the trap we were unsure of how she was going to react. A wild dog living on the run, could we even touch her? As we got her out of the trap we told her that everything was going to be ok now. Stiff with fear she let us put a leash around her neck and to all our surprise she walked on the leash with our volunteers carrying the 3 pups close behind. Her thin body covered with fox tails, fleas and ticks. The pups were also covered. We all stood in silence, with tears in our eyes unable to speak at the atrocity of what we were seeing. We can only guess from the way she is so kind and gentle that at one time she belonged to someone. Was she discarded or was she a stray that no one ever looked for? We don't know, but we have promised her a life of love and care for her and her babies. We will be raising funds for medical care for her stump leg. The Vet said it needs to be removed. Also her and her babies will need homes. We are praying for the right families to come along and hope someone will adopt mom and one pup together.
