The Cappy Comeback Fund

$5,140 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 48 people in 7 months
The owner and namesake of Cappy's Boxing Gym recently went through something horrible. Cappy says he knew the night his jaw was broken in two places was the beginning of a big change. He knew he could stay on the mat or get up.  He says the outpouring of support from his community helped him make it through the first week of shock, pain, low spirits and surgery.  Now,  we want to help Cappy continue his recovery and continue to give back to his community. Please consider contributing toward his medical costs.

Two months since the night I was sucker punched and my jaw was broken. I dedicated the experience to attaining BIG CHANGE. You all stepped into the corner to encourage me through the dark times, the fear, self-pity, pain, and anxiety. I upgraded my vulnerability levels, let go old habits that were holding me back, and took on a chronic energetic zone challenge - feeling unheard. This is a big one for me,
Thanks for your support. Everything I have faced and calmed down in the face of will be woven back into the gym. All of us make Cappy's a super cool training hub.
This will b e the last update for this project. Remember, live a boxer's lifestyle creed is:
Be on time
Do the drills
Be accountable for who shows up
Mark your achievement column
Bless you!

Six weeks post surgery. Relentless opportunities to face pressure challenges. A pressure fighter is one who swarms all over you from all angles and does not let up. Today I had the final hardwire removed. I could feel the approach last night, anxiety building. I took the bus to the hospital at 6 AM, and the procedure was done by 8. I was sedated but aware, and it was the weirdest experience. It felt like a video game. I could feel each wire coming off and hear the expressive groans coming from my mouth, but kind of from a distance, and the experience was not painful, just very vivid. I did call on my corner chorus - you guys! - as I felt the cold numbing agent go into my veins and then the tingly sedative. I heard you, I was able to calm down.

Six weeks into the broken jaw challenge. Anyone who has experienced a traumatic injury knows there are many phases to go through on the path to healing. Shock is the first phase, then denial/bargaining, when the enormity of the change ahead is inconceivable. Then there is pure survival in the midst of immense life disruption, pain, and grief. As the physical, mental and emotional balance gets more steady feet, another level emerges. A voice says, "Ok, feeling a bit better, time to move on, put this behind me!"
In some ways, this could be the most challenging phase to get through. I hit this phase - or energetic zone, as we at Cappy's call challenging experiences - this past weekend.
As a rule, it's not easy saying out loud that one is afraid. But, I recognized the signs of fear, anxiety and panic attack. I felt I wouldn't get through this, would not be able to heal. I called out to my corner, you fine chorus of coach voices, and remembered to visualize my sit bones. Replace fearful thoughts with a physical anchor. I can tell my sit bones are trying to talk to my jaw, two ends of the range. Trusti ng the body to do its jaw isn't always easy.
Thursday all the hardware comes off the teeth - still, it is surgery, so I gather my strength to prepare.

Five weeks post surgery today. A brutal and an amazing match. There was more stuff in my basement to take on than I thought. I needed definite upgrades in vulnerability, letting go, compassion and accepting community support. Thank you, everyone, for being on the path with me.
