Canoe Ungava

$3,215 of $2,000 goal

As July 2018 quickly approaches, the Canoe Ungava team is working hard to acquire the gear we'll need to traverse the Ungava Peninsula by boat and foot.

In order to be better environmental stewards and, more importantly, help pave the way for others in the Oudoor industry to reduce their impact, we are eliminating single-use plastics from our expedition.

Where this becomes most challenging is in food storage. It is typical to store all foods in plastic bags - they are compact, waterproof, and cheap - but they all go to the landfill at the end of the trip. Instead, unable to find a product on the market that meets our standards, we are hand-making at least 150 food bags to test on the trip.

As we continue to prepare, plan, and create, we are hoping to raise funds to help us meet the goals of our expedition.

Eliminating one-time-use plastics will add about $1,000 to our trip, including all food bag materials, inevitable failed prototypes, dry bags, and pack-liners. If this is a cause you would like to support financially, consider donations based on the following projected costs:

Food Bags and Containers - $400 ($2/bag + shipping)
Dry Bags and Reusable Pack-Liners - $600 ($20-50/bag)

In addition, there is still about $1,000 worth of equipment and supplies currently outside of our budget. These costs include camera equipment, baggage expenses, a collapsable setting pole, barrel harnesses, and more.

Whether you donate $2 to pay for one of our re-usable food bags, $40 for a camera battery, or $1,000 for a fold-up Pak Canoe, all funds raised will go toward a big adventure, and hopefully some answers on how to expedition more responsibly.

And stay tuned - upon our return in August we will post information and photos about the expedition, and about how we fared adventuring plastic-free.

Thank you for your support!

It is incredible to see that our campaign has not only reached, but exceeded our $2,000 goal! Tomorrow we board a Twin Otter plane from La Grande to Umiujaq where we will finally, after months of planning and preparation, be officially underway.

Thank you thank you to everyone who has contributed time, energy, money, love, advice, wisdom, and stoke. We can't wait to share the pictures and stories upon our return in late August.

Thanks and love,
Team Ungava

The ice is breaking on Hudson Bay, the caribou are nearly calving, the bugs are swarming, and we are putting together the final pieces of the Canoe Ungava Expedition!

As we chip away at the remaining items of our to-do lists, we are also gathering together our resources: generous volunteer drivers, point persons, and advice from locals, innovators, and adventurers.

In addition to those resources, it's been amazing to watch donations to support our goal of eliminating single-use plastics on this trip come in. We are excited to test our systems (and ourselves) against the elements in just a few short weeks.

All support is greatly appreciated, and even if you can't donate, consider sharing with others who may be interested! Thank you all so much.
