Dearest Friends and Family,
It's been a rough year for my parents, which many of you have been a part of. It doesn't appear that things are going to get much better either. This 7 year long cancer battle has beaten them down and they just keep getting back up. Before Rick (PapPap) was hospitalized this past March they booked a flight to come here to Hawaii to visit. (My husband is in the Marine Corps and we are stationed here.) We needed to see them and they needed the "Grands" as Mom says! I was woken up by mom at 0430 squealing on the phone telling me the news. The kids went nuts when they found out Grammy and PapPap would be here around both thier birthdays and the plan making began! Then Pops got sick. Three weeks of hospital time for his heart & cancer. Jerice (my husband) flew me home to be with them through everything as the prognosis wasn’t good. Needless to say the trip to Hawaii was called off. Pops wasn't healthy enough to fly and mom and I had both used all (and then some) of our paid vacation and sick leave. We decided we would put off the trip.
Reality has finally hit home now. Rick isn't going to get better. His newly broken rib will more than likely never really heal because the cancer has weakened them too much. He's had two rounds of radiation with no results. He's in so much pain most of the time, broken ribs are excruciating. He needs this trip, and soon.
My parents will kill me eventually for what I'm about to do, but I can live with that to make this happen for them. I simply can't afford to fly them here on my own. I'm still working to catch up after buying my ticket to VA and all the expenses that came with that trip. Mom has no paid time off and can't afford new tickets either. In the past you have all been so very supportive of our families Relay for Life team and we thank you for your love and support. This year instead of raising money for cancer research I'm asking you to help me raise money for “Cancer Wishes”. Help me get Mom and Pops to Hawaii. We need to spend time with them, and they with us. I want to be able to show them this amazing island we're blessed to be stationed on right now. They deserve this. They deserve to be able to enjoy 10 days of happiness with each other in this amazing place they'll probably never have another chance to see.
Please help me give them a break. The money raised will be used to purchase their round trip plane tickets to Hawaii, as well as cover my mom’s salary during the visit.
