Hello Heroes,
Last fall, our friend and colleague, Wendy Pace, learned that she was facing a life-changing diagnosis of highly invasive stage 2 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. As a 38 year old and one of the more health conscious people we know, this was a big shock to everyone in her life, especially her.
Since that diagnosis, Wendy has been battling this cancer to bring her body back into balance in a natural way that doesn't kill the cancer at the expense of the rest of her body. While this is her choice to make, insurance companies don't necessarily see it this way, nor will they cover many of the treatments she feels are the best choice for her. This has made what is already an extraordinarily hard journey even more difficult. She needs to step up her game in this fight, but she can't do it without the help and support of her friends and family.
So we are putting out a call of action to all the Heros in Wendy's life. Please join us in Operation: Cancer Takedown.
Your generosity will provide Wendy with the means to start the next leg of her journey - working with Tri Life Health Center ( http://www.trilifehealth.com/) in Fort Collins, CO. The Tri Life Team specializes in the Functional Medicine healthcare approach which will result in a more informed and personalized treatment procedures crafted just for Wendy. :)
If you know Wendy, you know she is warm, funny, and would go to bat for people in her life facing challenges far smaller than this. She is also very principled and brave, and is not afraid to stand by her decisions regarding her health. She's a little proud and a little stubborn, yes-- which means asking for help is not easy for her. So let's not make her ask, folks! Let's jump in the fray and let her know we've got her back!
What is TNBC?
A diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer means that the three most common types of receptors known to fuel most breast cancer growth–estrogen, progesterone, and the HER-2/neu gene– are not present in the cancer tumor. TNBC occurs in about 15% of diagnosed breast cancers, classifying it a rare form of cancer. Since the tumor cells lack the necessary receptors, common traditional cancer treatments,
hormone therapy and drugs that target estrogen, progesterone, and HER-2 are ineffective.
What exactly is Functional Medicine?
It is the practice of medicine that involves
understanding the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex, chronic disease. The Functional Medicine healthcare approach utilizes knowledge from a wide variety of academic and clinical areas including traditional medicine and alternative therapies, and therefore could be considered part of the medical field known as “complementary and integrative health care.” It combines scientific discipline with practical experience to create a balanced and conservative method for optimizing health.
Hallmarks of a functional medicine approach include:
· Patient-centered care. The focus of functional medicine is on patient-centered care, promoting health as a positive vitality, beyond just the absence of disease. By listening to the patient and learning his or her story, the practitioner brings the patient into the discovery process and tailors treatments that address the individual’s unique needs.
· An integrative, science-based healthcare approach. Functional medicine practitioners look “upstream” to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique genetic makeup of each patient is considered, along with both internal (mind, body, and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning.
· Integrating best medical practices. Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with what is sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques.
