Cancer Expenses for Mary Lescher

$22,676 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 221 people in 1 month
In spring of 2019, while on an animation job in Madrid, Mary Lescher, whose credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mulan, and most recently Klaus, learned she had developed an aggressive Stage 4 cancer of the gallbladder, which has progressed into her liver and lymphatic system.

Since chemotherapy didn't promise anything more than a few painful months, she refused it. The only course of action now is to manage her pain and keep her comfortable.

She has no medical insurance in the United States, but is currently surrounded by her family and longtime partner, John. Mary needs financial help getting through this last stage of her life. Donations will help with medications and living expenses, which are simply too high to handle without assistance.

This gofundme is organized by John Urbancik, Mary's partner for the past 20+ years, with the intention of using raised funds to pay for expected and unexpected medical and living expenses (for example, medication and doctor visits) as she deals with her terminal illness. John will be withdrawing the funds for Mary, as they have lived together for years and continue to do so now, and John is handling all the financial matters at this point in time. They currently reside in Florida.

If you aren't already aware, I hate to tell you and I’m sorry to do so, but Mary "Mery-et" Lescher passed away early Sunday morning, June 2, 2019, in her sleep in a hospice house in Tallahassee, Florida, near her parents and brothers and all her family. I was with her to the end, for years before the cancer diagnosis until her final breath.

She leaves a wonderful legacy, and was thrilled to have accomplished all she did. The final film she worked on, Klaus, I believe comes out later this year. In the meantime, If you’d like to watch something to remember her by, her favorite films she worked on include Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Mulan.

I posted most of that on Facebook last week.

I want to add now that your love and generosity was and is overwhelming. At the start of this, I read Mary the names (even the "private" names, which they reveal to us but not to the public) and the comments, when made. Many made one or both of us emotional. She would say she hadn't worked with that person since before Disney, or she didn't even know that person but I knew they were a fan in the horror genre. As the days and the disease progressed, and as the pain medication made her less lucid, she could only respond with smiles and nods.

I know I should have posted an update here sooner, but it's incredible hard to write this. The disease was fast. Our struggle with pain relief led us to hospice. In the end, she was comfortable, and she was smiling, and she loved all of you.

Thank you.

- John Urbancik
