Cancer, Bankruptcy, Foreclosure...

$27,330 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 224 people in 26 months
I’ve held it together the best I can.  Now it’s breakdown or breakthrough time.    We have two weeks to find a new home and move, and we’ve been at the oncologist for these last three days for Robert’s newly discovered cancer.  And I need a job. I don’t find it easy to ask, but we need help for:

·         A place to live for Robert, me, and 17-year-old Ian

·         Help with moving by April 28th (Robert won’t be his usual strong self)

·         Funds for Robert’s medical bills

·         An income stream

We’re dealing with bankruptcy, foreclosure and now cancer, and my attempts to find or create income haven’t worked. If there wasn’t such urgency I would never make these requests

How could I have let us get into this position?  We’re not stupid.  I have an engineering degree and an MBA, plus an HVAC license.  We’re not lazy.  Our employees would often comment on how hard Robert worked. Even after a stroke.  I’ve tried to find a job and/or create an income.   I can absolutely guarantee that I’m willing to work hard and provide value wherever and however I can.

When I left IBM 29 years I made this crazy agreement with God while staying all night on a hill in Hunt Texas.  “OK God, you tell me what to do and I’ll do it.”  I’ve followed that, often questioning whether I was getting the messages messed up.  Times like now.  Surely this can’t be right??!!??  I’m clear that through some unbelievable ups and downs, there has been a purpose.  I trust that’s still true now.  I’ve learned and I’ve recorded those learnings.

It’s so easy to question “what am I doing to deserve this?” Prevailing thought is that we must be doing something wrong for us to be in this position. Maybe I’ve been too focused on using my expertise to make a difference for the environment.  But Robert’s cancer reinforces rather than diminishes my belief in the importance.  We’re so lucky that his cancer was caught early. We can act immediately, and change the course of his health.  Similarly, we know the planet isn’t healthy.  By immediate action, we can change the course of the planet’s health.   I’m sure people will judge where we’re at and the path I’ve taken, and for putting this out there.  But I’m trusting that this is what I’m supposed to do.

Roberts’ Health
Robert has esophageal cancer. His mother died from it, but she didn’t go to the doctor until it was at Stage 4.  Thankfully Robert caught it so early that it’s extremely small and has maybe affected only two lymph nodes.  He will have six weeks of radiation and chemo, then six weeks to get strong again, then surgery to remove the section of the esophagus and connect it up to the stomach again.  As always he is active and fit and likely to recover well. Even after his stroke he is still strong enough physically to ride 40-mile bike rides.

I understand we need to pay 20% of the costs.  It’s $10,000 for our 20% portion of the radiation, and then an additional 20% of the chemo, prescriptions and surgery, which includes seven days in the hospital.

I was informed yesterday that we may still be able to get insurance to cover it.  We sat for two hours at the Social Security Office after yesterday’s doctor appointments but then had to leave to go to a college prep session at Ian’s school.  Yes, there’s that coming up too.  I’ve checked into Medicaid.  That takes 45 days to process, so maybe we’ll get it in time for the surgery, but not the chemo and radiation.  I need other paperwork to complete it. Trying to balance between finding a house, getting coverage in time, finding a job, packing…

Robert doesn’t want me to tell people where we’re at.  We’ve been through tough times before.  My mantra has always been “We’ll get through it; we always do.”  I can share what those experiences have been like and maybe it will provide value to others. But right now my partner in this journey is weakened, and I’m not strong enough to handle it.

Our Timeline
4/14 to 4/17       Find a place to live over Easter

4/18 to 4/21       Pack

4/22 to 4/23       Move

4/24 to 4/28       Robert’s first week of chemo and radiation

Asap                      Get medical coverage, get a job, create an income stream

I’d appreciate any help you can give and I will do my best to pay it back to you and to the world in some way at some time.

I wanted to share one more post with this amazing community of friends and supporters.

It looks like I’ve got a job, or more accurately, a contract starting soon. When the sustainability consultant job was postponed, I kept in action on my mission of accelerating sustainability solutions. I have been offered a contract, starting Feb 16th to work on a scale that will make a bigger difference, using my skills in a way I could not have predicted. I will be working on an environmental blockchain – a new technology field, and the work involves education and communication using my environmental knowledge and my expertise with data and statistics. I know I can create incredible value for them.

The work has come about because I was investing my time in furthering the causes I believe in. It will be a half time contract at first, which leaves me able to continue to work on the SAVE Center project which encompasses all the projects I’ve been investing in. Maybe I just had to wait until all the pieces aligned for this to come together…

I won’t be paid till March 1st. I don’t quite understand why there has to be this last financial chasm. That’s what it feels like, as I’ve checked into food stamps while the medical bills and rent late fees are accumulating. I know I have to focus on the temporary-ness. This too shall pass. The contract is 20 hours a week, but it will cover the basic minimums, and the intention is to make it full time after a couple of months as they get their next round of funding. I am so grateful.

In the in-between, I’ll be turning 60! It’s on Presidents’ Day, and I won’t be able to have a party, but maybe I’ll go somewhere like Central Market on N. Lamar. Maybe around 3 pm? I would love it if you would come by and say hi and celebrate this amazing journey so I can also give thanks to you.

To a greener and better tomorrow!

Robert's Update - PHENOMENAL!

We’ve just come from Robert’s appointment about his latest scan results.  The doctor’s words:  “Phenomenal.  Couldn’t be better news.”  Robert’s scan was clear!!!

To put this in context:  the prognosis for his stage of cancer was a median of one year.  It has been 9 months.  Instead he is reading, working on the computer, and socializing more than he has literally for years.  He rode 20 miles last Sunday. He is preparing for his next Toastmasters speech.  He has even started to cook from healthy recipes he researched, which I especially appreciate.  He is living his life fully.

There is no guarantee that random cells don't remain in his body, so they will be assessing a long term treatment.  But what this does say is that he has put his energy towards health, and it has worked! I have no doubt, knowing Robert, that he will continue to put his energy towards maintaining that health, and it will continue to work.

On a different front...

I’ve shielded Robert from our financial state so he could focus on healing.

I had an interview scheduled for a job this week as a sustainability consultant, referred by my previous employee that now works there.  But now the interview has been postponed a month, awaiting the award of a contract that’s been postponed.  I was, and continue to be optimistic about being offered the job.  But I need to generate income now. Urgently.

I put in applications on ZipRecruiter and Indeed, plus many others I heard about, with little results.  I’ve run my own businesses for almost 30 years, so my resume doesn’t correlate to many traditional jobs.  That’s a rationalization for my job search results at least.

The shoulda woulda coulda stresses loom over me.  (Click here for what I mean https://youtu.be/yINbVExfxNk ) Maybe I shoulda taken a low paying job just to keep going. Maybe I coulda put in more applications, or followed up on jobs that didn’t really fit but woulda at least paid me. Maybe I coulda held back funds instead of paying medical bills. Maybe I shoulda coulda woulda done more.

We’ve had income, but not steady and not enough.

This is where we are, and I must focus on moving forward. That’s what Mother Nature’s Laws tells me.

I have studied, written, and spoken about this for almost 40 years.  I believe Mother Nature’s Laws has answers that are urgently needed now.  I believe what inventor and futurist Buckminster Fuller said – that if we understood how the world worked we wouldn’t have the problems we have.

I haven’t been idle.  When not working on finding jobs I’ve worked on creating my own again. I’ve made great progress on several, all in alignment with energy management: global, organizational, personaI. See below.

I have invested time and energy in all of these with no financial return.  None of these can continue with just my investment though.  They have all become too big to be moved with only my force. They need a team and/or funding.

The one track I can do with just my own energy is the webinars on Mother Nature’s Laws.

So I’m asking, not for donations, but payments in exchange for value.  I’m asking for the opportunity to provide that value in this webinar about how laws of nature apply to human nature; about how to live in harmony with the laws that rule this planet. I'm asking you to consider making an 8-week, one-hour investment in creating your own results.

I’ve priced the webinar at $197, but I welcome participation with any investment, including the investment of your own human energy to fully engage in being a success story. The more the better.  More mass can create more force for good.

I ask for prayers that we get through once and for all from the financial strain we’ve been under and that Robert's continued health.

And if you will enroll in Mother Nature’s Laws webinar, I promise to use my energy to create incredible value for you.

I look forward to helping liberate your energy for the benefit of you and everyone else!

(These are the projects I've been working on to create my ideal state of using my skills and abilities to do work I love, make lots of money, and make a difference.)

SAVE (Simulation Analysis Visualization Education) Center - a high tech visualization and immersion center designed to solve complex problems.  The old Freescale Motorola site on 183 east of Austin is being developed and we're in conversations to locate there.  Working on a National Science Foundation $3M grant to enable that.

Mother Nature’s Laws Think Tanks planned to be held at the SAVE Center which complies with what NSF calls Convergence Research.  Example:  Stress in physical materials, geological (fracking) and societal, stress in biological organisms, human psychological stress, human stress-related illnesses, stress in other species

Advisor for THECoin – backing green assets with digital currency.  Currency was previously backed by gold which had tangible value.  That is no longer true.  By establishing a digital currency tied to revenue-producing environmentally “green” assets, THECoin will provide a level of security other cryptocurrencies don’t have, provide tangible environmental results, and enable inidividuals to support sustainability solutions that were previously only available to institutional investors.

MentaMorph Money - first conceived of and played while living in Australia, it's an online multi-player game played in rounds that teaches about money as units of energy storage, or value.  I have a pilot version, it was a finalist in the Pocket Change competition, and the LIVE Lab at Texas A&M University has agreed to develop it with me. For about $150k…

EcoCampaigns – ongoing campaigns to continually move us up the engagement curve of sustainability and celebrate the results.  No gloom and doom allowed. AISD is on board. It requires some resources, and product partners to fund campaigns while selling products.

I recognize these are big.  That's just the way my mind has gone as I've asked for guidance on what I should do to accelerate sustainability solutions.

From our family to yours, we are so sorry for the suffering you are experiencing and the anxiety that this sad world causes. When we have gone through trying times, we have found comfort from the scripture in Isaiah 41:10 "Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be anxious, for I am your God. I will fortify you, yes, I will help you, I will really hold on to you with my right hand of righteousness." I have been in a terrible medical situation uninsured before as well. Medicaid is, in my opinion, probably your top priority. When I got life-threateningly ill in 2011, my family was uninsured and I spent 10 days in the hospital, had chemo, other drugs, and 14 blood transfusions all in the span of a couple months. We had no way to pay for my $80000 hospital bill. My mom, through a social worker at the hospital, had been told to start the Medicaid applications RIGHT AWAY, and she did. The coverage did not come through for 45 days, or whatever the period was at the time. That being said, BECAUSE my mom started early, they actually BACK PAID ALL OF OUR COSTS! If the hospital tells you that you have to pay anything right away, don't listen. It's not true. You don't have to pay, they will bill you. Let the bills come, don't worry about them. Do the applications now, talk to social workers upon social workers at the hospital (they have people who deal with JUST Medicaid and stuff, just ask), and wait on hold with Medicaid, fill whatever they ask out, whatever you have to do, IT IS WORTH IT. I can't contribute financially as I have my own $ issues, but I think this is valuable information that not everyone has and I hope it's a real contribution in your time of need.
