Calvin needs $14,500 to cover all costs of tuition, fees, and materials for Cortiva Massage Therapy Institute.

Please be part of Calvin’s story and support his dream of transitioning from homelessness to professional healer by enrolling and completing massage therapy school. This will allow him to sustain himself after he ages out of the youth homeless shelters/programs that currently aid him in housing and support.

If #CalvinsStory has touched you, please share on Facebook to encourage others to donate!

CALVIN
Calvin is a humble, compassionate, and caring guy. A mediator amongst his friends, he believes in helping others and following his passions. Mindful meditation, jiu-jitsu, attending church and journaling are all activities that bring Calvin joy. As with Zen nature of meditation and the art of jiu-jitsu, Calvin is passionate about spreading that relaxed and calming aura into the world by way of massage therapy. He believes while relieving someone of physical pressure, he can talk with them, listen to them, get to know them and ultimately help relieve them of mental, emotional, and spiritual stress as well.

Though Calvin has dealt with the many insecurities that come along with homelessness since moving to Chicago years ago, he has taken advantage of the resources at his disposal like attending Truman College as well as working several jobs. Additionally, his volunteering at Illinois Masonic Hospital and role as a go-to peer for others in similar situations are testaments to his giving spirit and genuine connection with humanity. Calvin has put so much good out in the world, now it is time to return the favor.

“Whether you’re rich, poor, middle-class, motivation should be your friends, family, even strangers, your community. It should be about what’s good for people collectively, not  just what’s good for yourself.”
-- Calvin

Project Updates:
Since the project began Calvin thankfully secured a better housing situation in Rogers Park. It's a large house with many tenants, Calvin cooks and cleans in exchange for a room, we are uncertain how long this arrangement will last, though thankful for it! Thanks to all who have donated thus far, especially Massage Williamsburg & Massage Greenpoint for their large donation to see a new great young healer enter the profession!

THE PROJECT

Calvin’s Story: Homeless Healer is the first project for What Matters Productions in the Street Based Stories series. Co-produced with SoapBox Productions and Organizing, this micro-documentary tells the life and struggles of Calvin Curtiss, one of the countless homeless youths in Chicago and across the nation.

BIG PICTURE
As Calvin is by-far not alone in his struggle, this campaign serves as a pilot project for a series of pieces about young people surviving homelessness, countering the wider stereotypes about homeless people through individual stories of loving, kind, hard working individuals that are likely victims of their circumstances and structures beyond their control. Calvin’s Story is a launching point for a broader mainstream discourse and more actionable campaigns by way of digital marketing and sharable social media. These micro-documentaries can harnesses the power of emotional narrative to build a base of support from the community to change the structures that perpetuate homelessness.

Hello Calvin's Story Supporters!

Thank you again for donating to Calvin's campaign! What Matters Productions handed off the campaign funds to La Casa Norte (lacasanorte.org) last week. Donations for Calvin's Story are now closed but the struggle for awareness and resources to help overcome homelessness continues. Please find the Calvin's in your life and help them reach their dreams on the individual and organizational level.

Additionally, Calvin's Story has just entered the festival circuit! By bringing Calvin's Story in front of a broader audience of film lovers, filmmakers, and social justice advocates, we hope to spread the story of hardworking young people surviving homelessness to change the dominant narrative and support organizations that support these individuals. Unfortunately, that means we have to take down the campaign-version of Calvin's Story from the web until the festival circuit is over.

Once again, keep putting love out into the world and make the choices you can everyday to help the greater good! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Best,

Caullen Hudson & Quinn Wilson

Hello Calvin's Story Supporters!

Thank you again for donating to Calvin's campaign! Please go to GoFundMe.com/CalvinsStory, click “Updates” > “Read Previous Updates" > "Update 4" for an important message if you have not already. Calvin and us at What Matters are truly appreciative of your help and continued support. In amendment to Update 4, we are now donating the money to La Casa Norte (lacasanorte.org). After further research and guidance from Calvin and others within his community, we all feel the funds will be better utilized with La Casa Norte. They provide access to stable housing and deliver comprehensive services that act as a catalyst to transform lives and communities. Calvin and What Matters apologize for any confusion, for we realize the campaign has shifted in recent weeks. We would like to thank you again for your generous support and for putting your efforts and attention towards something that matters. As always, keep putting love out into the world and make the choices you can everyday to help the greater good! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Hello Calvin's Story Supporters!

Thank you again for donating to Calvin's campaign. Calvin and us at What Matters Productions are truly appreciative of your help and continued support.

As we know, Calvin is a caring individual who is always looking out for people. In his months of reflection and meditation on this wonderful opportunity that you and the broader GoFundMe community have bestowed on him, he has really had a chance to contemplate his role in making the world a better place. Massage therapy still remains Calvin's passion, but he feels it is not the right path for him right now. Calvin believes he could make a broader impact on the maximum amount of people if he gave the donations to the community-based non-profit The Night Ministry, operators of "The Crib" as featured prominently in the Calvin's Story micro-documentary.

Since production Calvin has found a stable living situation in Rogers Park where he cooks & cleans exchange for housing and a small stipend. It’s Calvins hope to use this money to help those in a less stable situations, find opportunity and peace. We want to reiterate with full transparency that the donated funds are completely Calvin's. This was a difficult yet noble decision that he made on his own accord.

What Matters understands that you donated your money to help Calvin attend massage therapy school, not The Night Ministry or any other non-profit organization. The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based organization that works to provide housing, healthcare and human connection to members of our community struggling with poverty or homelessness. As seen in our piece, they run "The Crib" and help many youth in similar situations as Calvin with housing security and support. With an open heart and an open mind, The Night Ministry accepts people as they are and work to address their immediate physical, emotional and social needs while affirming their sense of humanity. Learn more at TheNightMinistry.org.

However, if you would like to receive your donation back, we understand. Please follow these steps: Go to this link ( https://www.gofundme.com/mvc.php?route=contact/form&pid=2955_I_would_like_to_refund_my_donation) and fill out the forum. We have already notified GoFundMe that there may be many donors who wish to be refunded. Send them a message with the subject line "Calvin's Story Refund" and they should take care of the rest. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. We will wait until the date of April 24th, 2017 to allow folks time to request refunds, at which time the money will be donated to the Night Ministry. If you have additional ideas of how you’d like your donation to help, feel free to contact us directly.

We sincerely apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause. We would like to thank you again for your generous support in our campaign, in Calvin, in putting your efforts and attention towards something that matters. As always, keep putting love out into the world and make the choices you can everyday to help the greater good!

Thanks for creating this fundraiser to help Calvin along his healing path :) I am a Cortiva graduate and I do appreciate everything I learned there. I wanted to suggest an alternative to the Cortiva program; the Thai Bodywork Practitioner certification program. It is considerably affordable at aprox. $5,000. They have a work-study program as well to help offset costs. I have included the link here: http://thaibodywork.com/articles/tbp-certification/ With Metta, Nico
