When 13-year-old Emily Gibson disguises herself as a boy to help the Royal Navy find her father, she never intends to become one more missing person. Kidnapped by the blackhearted Captain Marcus, she is forced to work as a cabin boy aboard his ship. Emily must escape before the pirates see through her disguise, but when a midnight duel for a treasure map reveals a clue to her father's disappearance, staying aboard might be her only way to learn the truth! Produced by Roxy Theatre Group.  THE STORY OF CABIN BOY: THE MUSICAL It takes a village to raise a child.  –African Proverb It takes a community to make a musical. This one starts with a story, written seventeen years ago by a girl in middle school. She found she had a knack for writing, and a love for high-seas adventure! After college, that girl came back to her story, and found it still had value. It needed to get out into the world! Now an adult, she did some hands-on research aboard the Kalmar Nyckel ship, and self-published her story as a children’s novel: CABIN BOY. Then something unexpected happened...while trying to sell her books at local schools, she met the co-founder of the Roxy Theatre Group! “Show this to my sister,” he said, “She’s always looking for books to turn into shows.” So the girl met with the Roxy Team at a Starbucks in West Kendall.   “We’d like to turn your book into a play," they said. She was astounded! “Can it be a musical?!” “Well...no. We’d have to hire someone to write the music, a music director, and someone to lead the musicians, etc.” “I can do it!” she said, “I trained to be a band director in college, and studied composition! I can do it all for you!”  “Ok.” So, for the next three years, the girl worked on her show. Spending Sundays and nights typing (and venting to her mom when it got hard), she wrote the script, song lyrics, and orchestrated the music. Little by little, CABIN BOY: THE MUSICAL came to life! Roxy Theatre Group held its first developmental reading of the show, then a public reading as it continued to grow. Actors auditioned, friends volunteered, costumes were brought in, and choreography was added. The girl smiled so many times she lost count--grateful to everyone, every single second of this ride.  And now all that effort and collaboration has led her here...to you.  CABIN BOY: THE MUSICAL is ready to be performed as a full production, and we need help from the community! We need to raise $6,000 by June 21st to rent the Wertheim Performing Arts Center on the campus of Florida International University. CABIN BOY will premiere there in August.
