I hope you guys are all doing well and staying warm
I just wanted to give a brief update on my situation. I've been undergoing tests, interviews and evaluations since the first week of January at the INOVA Fairfax Transplant Center. I might have one or two more steps to complete but I've been told that my chances of being accepted as a candidate are very good and I could be on the list as early as the end of this month. It took a lot of effort to get the ball rolling but it seems to be travelling at something close to warp speed now. Time on the list is generally between 30 - 90 days, pretty quick!
The recovery period will consist of about two weeks in the hospital. I'm told that they want me walking the day after surgery. I will be in the ICU during that time and then will be in "isolation" at home for roughly the first three months. Things loosen up a little in the next three months and then, if all goes well, I can resume living a fairly normal life. There will be many restrictions but they all make sense and, having been afforded this exceptional opportunity, I won't push the envelope.
During the first months of recovery my drug costs have been projected to be $9497 monthly! That figure should drop by about 75% if I don't experience any serious rejection issues. Insurance coverage is apparently going to cover most of this and the transplant team has a special office to deal with insurers who can't (read: don't want to) acknowledge that there are life saving drugs out there that cost over $55 per pill. The generous efforts of the Reston community at my retirement will be appreciated more than ever when those co-pays start coming due.
I miss being out there on the streets of Reston and interacting with so many fabulous people. That said....there are a few old customers who fall into a category something less than fabulous. I have a considerable amount of money still outstanding despite numerous attempts at collection. Can you suggest anything that might enable me to pry the money I'm due from the hands (or pockets) of a few folks who apparently think they are under no obligation to pay since I've gone out of business? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Please give my regards to all,
PS Sorry this wasn't as brief as I indicated
So we increased our goal to $3,000! Thanks to all who supported John and let's keep going! Elizabeth
