Poker for a Cause benefitting Sonia Sanchez and her children, Mia and Diego
WHO’S THAT GIRL?
Sonia was born in Guachinango, Jalisco and came to the US at the age of three. Many of you may not know this but Sonia was a boy for a while. Well, before rumors start, let’s clarify. Sonia was brought to the US disguised as a boy. Sonia’s mom had to cut her hair, dress her like a boy and train her to say that her name was “Carlitos.” For the longest time, little Sonia would say that her name was Carlitos. She may still answer to the name. Try it out, just for fun.
Sonia and her four siblings were raised by a single mom in Maywood, CA and attended Bell High School. She could have easily become a Southeast LA statistic as the area was plagued with teen pregnancy, gang activity and high dropout rates. Instead, Sonia was the first in her family to attend college - she graduated from Occidental College and Loyola Law School. She passed the bar and began to practice law in 1999 at the age of 26. She dedicated her legal career to helping low-income, disabled and elderly individuals of East and Southeast LA with the non-profit, Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice and later with Inner City Law Center. She also spent 7 years as an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board protecting worker’s rights. Her latest work has been with the YouthBuild program, LA CAUSA, which provides education, vocational training, and leadership programs to at-risk youth in East Los Angeles. Sonia’s tireless advocacy for the less fortunate can only be matched by her dedication to her two young children, Mia 8 and Diego 7. Sonia is a single mom and juggles work and family life like a real-life superwoman. Really.
For years Sonia has struggled with what she thought was stomach pain due to gastritis, acid reflux or some other minor condition. About 3 months ago, Sonia’s pain began to become unbearable and after many doctor, urgent care, and ER visits, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer - Lymphoma. The news was initially devastating to her and her family but through love, faith and a bit of humor, she and her family are confident that this too shall pass.
Sonia has had extensive hospital stays and treatment and as you may know, HMO’s only cover so much. The bills are starting to roll in and this fundraiser will help Sonia and her family tremendously.
