For the next two months, I am trying to raise $5500 to support the development of my new work Letters and the remounting of The Browder Project. As you know, I am currently the 2019 DanceVisions Artist in Residence at the Performance Garage and with PG's generous support, Dawn Marie Bazemore|#dbdanceproject has spent the past eight months creating a new piece entitled Letters which will be presented at the Performance Garage April 19-20 along with The Browder Project which is being remounted in part due to popular demand.
While the cost of presenting both works is steep, the purpose is clear and necessary. Utilizing art to address the social and political concerns of our community is essential and I am hopeful that you will support our endeavors. All funds raised will go directly to the production elements of this program including: Sound design, light design, costume design and the rebuilding of The Browder Project set.
The Browder Project was inspired by the life and death of Kalief Browder, a 16 year old African American boy who spent three years on Rikers Island for a crime of which he was never convicted. This work explores the inherent racial bias that exists in our criminal justice system as well as the catastrophic mental effects of solitary confinement. During this presentation of The Browder Project we will discuss our recent connection with The Kalief Browder Foundation and it's initiatives that are designed to assist young African American men who have found themselves navigating through the US penal system.
