Choung Hoover Memorial Fund

Donation protected
This is my mother, Choung Hoover. She was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer on August 7, 2015, and passed away on August 19, 2015. With her cancer uncurable and a desire to live her final days without pain, we moved her into hospice care on August 11.

My mom spent her last days in the company of her three sisters and one brother and their families; her husband of nearly 35 years, Ray; and me.  She ate tomatoes from her garden and peaches and watermelons from her favorite roadside produce stands, brought to her every day by my dad. She laughed with her sisters and reveled in the joy of a visit by a hospice therapy dog, Sirius. She told me she was proud of me and "admired my guts." She spoke repeatedly about being happy with her life; a home she could call her own and a full stomach were all she ever wanted after living in poverty in war-ravaged South Korea.

Mom wanted the end of her life to be peaceful, and for the pain of her loss to not be prolonged. Thus, she wished to not have a service ("I don't need funeral mumbo-jumbo," she said. “It just makes it more painful.”) and asked for us all to return to our lives as quickly as possible.

Of course, that is easier said than done. While there will be no funeral, per my mother's request, I know there are so many friends of ours who want to help our family at this time.  So, let's offer our support to organizations that served my mother and her family during her illness and a cause that she holds dear. Contributions to this fund will be allocated in the following three ways: 1. Payment and a gift to the Hackerman-Patz House at Lehigh Valley. Hackerman-Patz provides affordable accommodation to patients needing treatment and the families supporting them. 2. A gift to the staff of the in-patient hospice unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital - 17th Street and 3. A donation to the Hillside SPCA in Pottsville.

Your gifts are deeply appreciated. My family offers our profound thanks at this time, and we are grateful to have you in our lives.
